A day in Kullu town: the Raghunath temple at Sultanpur, the shawl bazaar, the Dhalpur fair ground and the carved hill temple at Bhekhli, with measured times.
Most people see Kullu through a windscreen on the way to Manali. This is the day that does not. The temple that gave the valley its ruling deity, the bazaar that still weaves and sells the shawl, the ground where the whole valley gathers in October, and the carved temple on the hill above all of it.
It is a walking day with one drive at the end. Nothing needs booking, nothing needs a guide, and the road minutes below are measured on the real road network rather than remembered.

A first visit that has a day in hand, anyone waiting on a flight from Bhuntar, and travellers who would rather see a working town than a resort. If the ridge walk is what you came for, take the Bijli Mahadev day instead; for both, the two-day plan.

Day 1
Sultanpur, the bazaar, Dhalpur and the climb to Bhekhli
A day on foot in the town, with one short drive at the end. The temple first, the bazaar through the middle of the day, the fair ground in the afternoon and the hill temple for the last hour of light.

Getting there
Kullu sits on the highway 40 km and about 49 minutes below Manali and 11 km and 17 minutes above the airport at Bhuntar. Buses from Mandi, Manali and Bhuntar run through the day and stop in the bazaar. From Chandigarh it is 225 km, a little over four hours of driving.
Where to stay
The bazaar for the temples and the buses, Dhalpur for a quieter night five minutes away, or Raison on the river 15 km and 20 minutes up the valley. During Dussehra every room within an hour is taken months ahead.
Know before you go
- Go to the Raghunath temple before 10:00; the lanes are narrow and the queue builds through the morning.
- Prices are bands checked in September 2026, quoted on the day and higher in the fair week.
- The Bhekhli road is single-track with a short walk at the end; a taxi waits at the village.
- Cash still matters in the bazaar's older lanes, though the showrooms take cards.
- Sunday is the bazaar's busiest day and the worst one for parking on the highway.

The ridge instead: the Bijli Mahadev day drives to Chansari and climbs to the temple.
Both, properly: the two-day plan sleeps in the town between them.

Is one day enough for Kullu town?
For the town itself, yes: the temple, the bazaar, the fair ground and the hill temple fill a day comfortably on foot. What a day does not cover is Bijli Mahadev, which needs its own morning — 15 km and 28 minutes to the road-end at Chansari and about 96 minutes of climbing.
What is the Raghunath temple, and can anyone visit?
It holds the image installed in the 17th century, when the king of the day made the god the ruler of the valley. Anyone may visit; shoes come off at the courtyard and the shrine itself is not photographed. It is a working temple in a residential quarter, not a monument.
Is there anything to see at Dhalpur outside the fair?
Not much, and that is the point of seeing it: an open ground with a cricket match and a few stalls, which for one week in October holds the largest gathering in the state. Standing on the empty grass first makes the photographs of the fair make sense.
