Jana Falls

What it is

A waterfall in forest above the village of Jana, up a side valley east of Naggar. The village's dhabas have become known across the valley for the food: siddu with ghee, trout from the stream, red rice, the local sours and sweets, eaten on a terrace with the falls behind. The cascade is a pleasant short walk from the road end; the lunch is what people drive up for. It is in Kullu's reach as much as Manali's, about 32 km and 53 min from the bus stand, and it is the second half of a Naggar day.

Getting there

Down the left-bank road to Naggar, then up the narrow road east through orchards and forest to Jana — about 32 km and roughly 53 min from Manali in all, half an hour of it from Naggar. A taxi for the day is the sensible way; buses reach Naggar and are rare beyond it. The road end is at the village; the falls are a short walk on.

The day

Naggar Castle and the Roerich gallery in the morning; the road up to Jana for a late lunch at the dhabas; the walk to the falls after; down to Manali by dark. Order the siddu and the trout, sit on the terrace, and do not hurry the return.

When to go

April to June and September to November, for a dry road and full water. The monsoon makes the narrow road slow; winter can ice the upper stretch and quiets the dhabas. Weekends in season bring Kullu; a weekday lunch is the calm one.
