What it is

A waterfall that comes down the rock beside the Rohtang road in a stand of deodar above Kothi, with a lay-by where the buses and taxis stop and a short path to the foot. It is a stop on the pass day rather than a place of its own: fifteen minutes of spray and big trees between the gorge at Kothi and the meadow at Gulaba.

Getting there

About 26 km and roughly 47 min from the bus stand, on the pass road above the fork at Palchan. The falls are below the checkpost at Gulaba, so the road reaches them without a permit when it is open; from December to April it is closed by snow above Kothi and the falls are out of reach by car.

When to go

May and June for the snowmelt, when the stream is loudest; September and October for the clear road and dry trees. Mornings, before the pass traffic fills the lay-by. The monsoon makes the road unreliable and the path slippery.

What to do

Walk to the foot for the spray, look up through the deodars, and go on. Shoes that can take wet rock; the path is slick where the spray lands. Nothing to pay.

Where are Rehala Falls?

Beside the Rohtang road above Kothi and below Gulaba, about 26 km and roughly 47 min from the Manali bus stand, where the road passes through a stand of deodar and the stream comes down the rock beside it. There is a lay-by and a path to the foot. It is a season-only stop.

Do you need a permit to see Rehala Falls?

The falls are below the checkpost at Gulaba, so a car can reach them without a Rohtang permit when the road is open; in practice most people see them on the way to the pass with a permit in hand. From December to April the pass road above Kothi is closed by snow and the falls are out of reach.

When are Rehala Falls at their best?

May and June, when the snowmelt is heaviest and the stream is loud; and September, when the road is clear and the deodars are dry. The monsoon makes the road unreliable. In winter the falls freeze in part, but the road to them is shut. Mornings are quiet; by mid-morning in June the lay-by is full.

How long do you need at Rehala Falls?

Fifteen to thirty minutes: the lay-by, the walk to the foot of the falls, the spray, the trees. It is a stop on a bigger day — the pass, Gulaba, Marhi — rather than a destination, and it does not need more. Shoes that can take wet rock if you go to the foot; the path is slippery in spray.
