Tosh

What it is

A village on a shelf above the head of the Parvati road, an hour's climb from the bridge at Barshaini. Old timber-and-stone houses at the top, guesthouses and café terraces at the bottom facing the snow across the valley, and terraced fields stepping down to the river. It is the valley's village-on-the-hill: the place people walk up to for lunch and, if they are wise, stay the night.

Getting there

From Kasol, 37 minutes by road to Barshaini; the taxi is typically ₹800–1,500 one way as of September 2026, and the valley bus runs to the same road-end. Then on foot: the path leaves from the bridge and climbs for an hour, paved and steep in places. A jeep road reaches a car park below the village for anyone who cannot walk it; by road the whole run is about 20 km and 50 minutes. Shoes, not sandals, for the path.

The day

Up in the morning while the path is in shade. A slow lunch on a terrace with the snow in front of you, the old houses at the top of the village for the last flight of steps, and down by mid-afternoon — or a room for the night, which is the better plan. After dark there is nothing to do, and that is the point.

When to go

March to June and September to November for the walking and the view; October for the clearest sky. The monsoon makes the path slippery and the view cloud. From late December to February the village is under snow for weeks at a time — cold, half closed, and the reason for the winter plan.
