Barshaini

What it is

The end of the Parvati road, 16 km and 37 minutes above Kasol: a bridge over the river, a car park where the buses turn and the taxis wait, a row of dhabas, and the dam works in the riverbed below the village. Nobody comes for Barshaini itself. Everybody who walks in this valley passes through it — Tosh is up the path from the bridge, Kalga and Pulga are just above on the other side, and Kheerganga is a day's climb beyond them.

Getting there

By the valley bus from Kasol or Bhuntar, which ends here, or by taxi from the Kasol stand — typically ₹800–1,500 one way as of September 2026, and a little more if it waits for the walk down. The road runs through Manikaran and narrows after it, with the river below; in July and August slides can close it for hours at a time. Fill water and buy what you need here — there is nothing above but dhabas.

The day

Cross the bridge and choose: left and up for Tosh, an hour; straight on and up through the apple trees for Kalga and Pulga, twenty to thirty minutes; or the long path up the left bank for Kheerganga, four hours. Back at the car park by mid-afternoon if it is a day walk, and tell the taxi when to expect you — the signal fades above the village.

When to go

April to June and September to November for the walks. The monsoon brings slides on the road and mud on the paths; from December to February the paths above are under snow and the buses run to a shorter timetable.
