Kalpa is a village at 2,960 m in Kinnaur, above the Sutlej gorge, with the Kinnaur Kailash range standing directly in front of it. It was called Chini in the colonial period and was the district headquarters before that role moved down to Reckong Peo. Apple orchards, pine-nut forests and deodars surround the village, and its temples are dedicated to both Hindu and Buddhist deities.

The old village is a walk. Narayan Nagini Temple, the Lotsawa temple and the fort tower are within 4 minutes of the road. Chandika Devi Temple at Kothi is 17 minutes away, and Reckong Peo, the district market, is 20 minutes down the hill. The Kinnaur Kailash range, 6,050 m high and sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, is visible from the village itself.

A day covers the old village and Kothi; two days add Reckong Peo and a slower look at the range. See the one-day plan and the two-day plan, things to do in Kalpa, when to visit and how to reach Kalpa.
