Solang

What it is

A wide meadow at the head of the valley, 12 km north of Manali where the road to the Atal Tunnel leaves the river, with a ridge above it that people fly off and a slope beside it that a ropeway climbs. It is the valley's playground: paragliding, ponies, zorbing and a ropeway in season, ski slopes when the snow holds, and, at the quiet end, the walk to a shrine under a rock.

Solang is also a stop rather than a destination for most days out — the last meadow before the tunnel, the place to eat on the way back from Sissu, the start of the Beas Kund trek. What it is not is quiet after ten in season.

Getting there

The road north out of Manali through Palchan reaches the Solang car park in about 24 min; shared cabs fill at the bus stand in the mornings and a full-day taxi will wait. The counters that sell everything are above the car park; the meadow is below it; the ridge is a jeep track up.

When to go

Early, always. The ridge flies best between eight and ten and the car park is empty; by eleven in May and June the road back is one long queue. Spring to autumn is the meadow season; December to February is the snow season, when the reliable snow is on the tunnel road and Sissu beyond it rather than on the meadow itself.

What it costs

Everything is bought on the spot and priced by the day. Paragliding is typically ₹3,000–5,000 for a tandem flight (as of September 2026), the paragliding guide has the details; ponies, zorbing and the ropeway are quoted at the counters, and the price moves with the crowd. Cash, and ask for the receipt.

Around it

The Anjani Mahadev shrine is a gentle walk from the road above the meadow. The Atal Tunnel is on up the road past Dhundi. Stays at Palchan and Kothi put you twenty minutes from the meadow; our stays and map show them.
