Anjani Mahadev
What it is
A shrine to Shiva under a rock wall at the head of the Solang meadow, where a stream comes off the cliff and in the coldest weeks freezes into a column of ice that is worshipped as a natural lingam. In summer it is a waterfall, a small temple, and a bowl of meadow and cliff with the peaks close above — one of the best short walks in the valley, and the quiet end of a Solang day.

Getting there
To the road above the Solang meadow, about 23 min from the bus stand, then on foot: a path climbs through meadow and boulders to the shrine in about 46 min at an easy pace, and comes down in about 21 min. Ponies are offered at the road. No ticket, no guide.
When to go
January and February for the ice column, when the cold has built it; the path is icy then and the middle of the day is the time. April to June and September to November for the waterfall and the walk in the dry. July and August are wet underfoot and the stream is loud.
The walk
Easy to moderate, on a path that is clear all the way, with the shrine visible under the cliff for the last stretch. Shoes with grip, water, a layer for the top; the bowl under the rock is colder than the meadow. Two to three hours for the round trip with time at the shrine.
Around it
Solang is the meadow you climb from; the Beas Kund trek starts from Dhundi on the road above; the tunnel is on up. The waterfalls itinerary pairs this walk with Jogini.

What is Anjani Mahadev?
A shrine to Shiva at the foot of a rock wall above the Solang valley, where a stream falls from the cliff and, in the coldest months, freezes into a tall column of ice worshipped as a natural lingam. In summer it is a waterfall and a small temple in a bowl of meadow and cliff under the peaks.
How do you get to Anjani Mahadev?
Drive to the road above the Solang meadow, about 23 min from the Manali bus stand, then walk: a path climbs from the road through meadow and boulders to the shrine in about 46 min at an easy pace, about 21 min back down. Ponies are offered at the road. No ticket, no guide needed.
When is the ice lingam at Anjani Mahadev?
In the depths of winter, usually January and February, when the stream freezes on the rock into a column that grows with the cold. It is the reason many people come then. The path is icy and the walk harder in those months; go in the middle of the day with shoes that grip.
Can you combine Anjani Mahadev with Solang?
Easily — it is the same drive. Fly or ride at the meadow in the morning while the air is calm, then walk up to the shrine before lunch, or do the walk first while the meadow is empty and come down to the counters after. Two to three hours for the shrine with time at the top.
