Manali by air — three nights from the Bhuntar flight, castle on the way up

Three nights in Manali built round the Bhuntar flight: Naggar Castle on the road up from the airport, Solang and Old Manali, the tunnel to Sissu, the grove.

Flying into Bhuntar turns Manali from an overnight bus into a long weekend, and this plan is built round the flight. The airport is 49 km and about 62 min below the town, and Naggar Castle sits on the left-bank road between the two, so the first afternoon is the old capital on the way up rather than a hotel check-in. Three nights in Manali follow — the meadow and the old village, the tunnel to Sissu, the grove on the last morning — and the drive back down to the flight.

The catch with Bhuntar is the weather: the flights are few and are cancelled in cloud and rain more often than at other airports. The plan works from Chandigarh too, with the road up the valley replacing the flight; the castle stop stays.

Who this is for

Couples and friends flying in from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or anywhere with a connection to Chandigarh or Bhuntar; anyone who has three nights and no appetite for the overnight bus. Not in July and August, when the flights are cancelled most often and the roads close; not for anyone who wants the pass, which needs a fourth day and a permit.

Day by day

Day 1

Land at Bhuntar, the castle on the way up

The airport is 49 km and about 62 min below Manali; Naggar is on the road between, so the first afternoon is the old capital.

  1. 13:00
    Naggar Castle
    fort · 31 min from Manali · about 2 h there
Off the highway onto the left-bank road at Patlikuhl; the rajas' castle from around 1460 for a late lunch on the terrace and the courtyards.

    17:00
    Vashisht Temple
temple · 6 min from Manali · about 45 min there
Into Manali by the far bank; the hot baths across the river before the first night.
Day 2

The meadow, the shrine, the old village

Early to Solang while the air is calm, a walk, and the evening in Old Manali.

  1. 08:00
    Solang
    town · 21 min from Manali · about 3 h there
The meadow 12 km up the valley; a tandem flight if the morning is calm, typically ₹3,000–5,000 as of Sep 2026, quoted on the day.
  2. 10:30
    Anjani Mahadev
temple · 23 min from Manali · 46 min on foot · about 45 min there
The walk to the shrine under the rock, about 46 min up at an easy pace, about 21 min down.
  3. ↓ 28 min by road · 14 km
    16:00
    Old Manali
area · 5 min from Manali · about 30 min there
The lane, the Manu temple at the top, dinner on a café roof.
Day 3

Through the tunnel to Sissu

The high day, with no permit; an hour each way.

  1. 08:30
    Atal Tunnel
road · 43 min from Manali · about 30 min there

    09:30
    Sissu
    town · 54 min from Manali · about 1 h 30 min there

    town · 21 min from Manali · about 1 h 30 min there
The gorge from the bridge on the way down; five minutes and tea.
Day 4

The grove, the museum, and the flight

A morning in the town before the drive down to Bhuntar; allow two hours for the road and the airport.

  1. 08:00
    Hadimba Devi Temple
temple · 1 min from Manali · about 45 min there
The cedar grove before the queue; the loop behind the pagoda.
  2. ↓ a short walk
    09:15
Museum of Himachal Culture and Folk Art
    museum · 5 min from Manali · about 1 h 30 min there
Two minutes from the temple gate; an hour under a roof, then the road to the airport.

Getting there

Fly to Kullu–Manali Airport at Bhuntar — a few flights a day, mostly from Delhi and Chandigarh, weather permitting — and take a taxi up the valley, about 62 min direct or the afternoon via Naggar. If the flight is cancelled, the fallback is Chandigarh: a flight there and the road up, 264 km and about 289 min, with a night at Chandigarh if the day is gone. On the way back, allow two hours from Manali to the airport door; the road through Kullu is slow on weekends.

Where to stay

Old Manali for the three nights — near the cafés, the museum and every drive's starting point — or Vashisht for the hot springs at the door. Our stays page shows what is open and what it costs; the where to stay article compares the areas.

Know before you go

  • Book a flight that lands by midday; the castle stop on the way up needs the afternoon, and the valley road is slow after dark.
  • Keep a road plan for the flight: Bhuntar loses days to cloud. A cancelled morning flight to Bhuntar can often be rebooked to Chandigarh the same day.
  • Ask the taxi to take the left-bank road at Patlikuhl for Naggar; the highway bypasses it.
  • Paragliding at Solang is typically ₹3,000–5,000 for a tandem flight (as of Sep 2026); fly early, ask for the receipt, check the harness.
  • The tunnel needs no permit; in winter the road above Solang is cleared after each fall and the police may check chains.
  • Cash for the dhabas at Sissu and the counters at Solang; the machines drop with the power.

If plans change

If the flight lands late: skip Naggar on the way up and do it on the last morning instead of the grove, with lunch on the castle terrace before the drive to the airport.

If you want the pass: it needs a fourth night, a permit and a six o'clock start; the four-day plan has it.

In winter: the same plan works — Sissu is the snow day — with the snow itinerary as the reference and a heated room.

Questions people ask

Which airport is closest to Manali?

Kullu–Manali Airport at Bhuntar, 49 km and about 62 min down the valley, with a few flights a day, mostly from Delhi and Chandigarh. It is a small field and the flights are cancelled in cloud and rain more often than elsewhere, so keep a road plan; Chandigarh, 264 km away, is the reliable airport.

How do I get from Bhuntar airport to Manali?

By taxi from the terminal, about 62 min direct on the highway through Kullu, or the afternoon by the left-bank road with a stop at Naggar Castle on the way, which this plan does. Buses run from Bhuntar to Manali too, slower and with a change at Kullu. Book the return taxi for two hours before the flight.

Can I fly to Manali from Mumbai or Bangalore?

With a connection: through Delhi or Chandigarh to Bhuntar when the flight runs, or to Chandigarh and the road up the valley when it does not. The road from Chandigarh is 264 km and about 289 min, a day's drive with a stop, and the sensible fallback for any Bhuntar cancellation.

Is three nights enough for Manali by air?

Yes, and it is the natural length for a flight: the castle on the afternoon you land, the meadow and the old village, the tunnel to Sissu, and the grove on the morning you leave. What it leaves out is the pass, which needs a fourth night and a permit, and the treks, which need three days on their own.
