Manali weekend from Chandigarh — two nights, one snow morning
Chandigarh is the natural base for a Manali weekend: 264 km and about 289 min of driving, so a six o'clock start puts you in the hot springs by mid-afternoon on Saturday and back home for Sunday dinner. This plan spends the one full day on the tunnel to Sissu — an hour each way, no permit, and the only day out from Manali that changes the country — and keeps the two half days close to the town.
It works in every month, which is its point. In December the Sissu morning is a snow morning; in October it is the clearest drive of the year; in April the valley floor is in blossom and the far side is still white. Nothing here depends on the pass or on a permit.

Who this is for
Friends and couples from Chandigarh, Mohali and the tricity with a car and two days; anyone who has done the Delhi overnight bus once and would rather drive from closer. Not for a first visit that wants Rohtang — that is a season-only, permit-only day and this plan leaves it out on purpose.

Getting there
Drive: the Chandigarh–Manali road through Bilaspur, Mandi and the Aut tunnel, 264 km and about 289 min without stops. Leave by six on Saturday; breakfast at Mandi. Buses from the ISBT 43 run through the day and take longer. Bhuntar airport is the fly-in alternative at 49 km from Manali, weather permitting.
Where to stay
Two nights in Old Manali or Vashisht — Vashisht puts the hot springs at the door for the first afternoon and the tunnel road ten minutes closer for Sunday. Our stays page lists both with what they cost this season; the map shows the tunnel road from each.
Know before you go
- The drive is the trip's cost. Leave Chandigarh by six on Saturday and Manali by noon on Monday, and both ends are daylight.
- Sissu needs no permit. If you are offered a Rohtang permit for the weekend, you do not need it for this plan.
- In December and January leave Manali later on the Sissu day — the road above Solang is cleared after each snowfall and the plough goes first.
- Carry cash for the dhabas at Sissu and the temple lanes; card machines drop with the power.
- The hot baths at Vashisht are free and separate for men and women; take a towel and something to change into.
If plans change
If the tunnel road is closed by snow: Solang and the road to Kothi for the morning, then the sanctuary walk from Old Manali.
If you want the meadow rather than Lahaul: swap Sissu for Solang and the walk to Anjani Mahadev — the couples plan does it that way.
With a third night: add Naggar Castle and lunch at Jana Falls on the way down — it is on the road home.

How long does it take to drive from Chandigarh to Manali?
About 264 km and roughly 289 min of driving on a clear road, so five to six hours with a breakfast stop at Mandi. Leave by six on a Saturday and you are in Manali for a late lunch; leave later and the Mandi–Kullu stretch fills with everyone else. Sunday evening down is the slow direction.
Is a two-night Manali trip from Chandigarh worth it?
Yes, if the one full day is spent well. This plan gives it to the tunnel and Sissu, an hour each way with no permit, and keeps the half days to the hot springs, the Mall, the temple and the museum, all minutes from the town. A real weekend rather than a drive with a temple in it.
Do we need a Rohtang permit for this weekend?
No. The plan uses the Atal Tunnel, which needs no permit and is open every month, to reach Sissu on the Lahaul side. Rohtang Pass is a permit-only, May-to-November day that takes the whole of it; on a two-night trip from Chandigarh it is the wrong use of the only full day.
Which month is best for a Chandigarh–Manali weekend?
October for clear skies and open roads; December and January for snow at Sissu and a quiet town; March and April for blossom below and snow above. Avoid July and August, when slides close the tunnel road for hours, and long weekends in May and June, when the drive up doubles in the traffic.
