What it is

Manali's pedestrian high street, a few minutes' walk from the bus stand: shawls and caps, woollens, dry fruit, sweet shops, restaurants, and in the evening the town and its visitors walking up and down it. It is the centre of the town, not the valley, and it is where everyone ends up on the evening they arrive.

What to buy

The valley's own craft is the Kullu shawl and the woollen Kullu cap with its coloured band. Check the wool and the weave; handloom costs more than mill-made and lasts. Dry fruit, apple jam and juice from the orchards below the town. Warm clothes if you came without them. Prices are marked and bargaining is modest.

When to go

Early evening, from five, when the shops light up and the walk happens. Mornings are quiet. In May and June the crowd is shoulder to shoulder; in October or March it is a small-town stroll. Closed to cars all day.

What is not here

The valley. The Mall is an evening; the days are at Solang, the Hadimba temple, Naggar, the walks. Old Manali across the stream is the other evening, with better food. Our cafés page has the ones we know on both sides.
