Paragliding in Manali

Paragliding in Manali happens at Solang, 12 km up the valley: tandem flights off the ridge above the meadow, typically ₹3,000–5,000, best before ten.

Where it happens

Paragliding in Manali means Solang. The meadow sits 12 km up the valley from the bus stand, about 24 min by road, and the flights launch from the ridge above it and land on the grass below. Our stays on the Solang road put the launch twenty minutes away; the map shows the meadow against the town. You do not book anything in town: the counters are above the car park at the meadow, the pilots stand beside them, and a jeep takes you up to the take-off point.

There are two lengths of flight. The short one launches from a lower shoulder of the ridge and lasts a few minutes — a first taste, and what most first-timers buy. The long one goes from higher up, stays in the air longer and costs more. Both are tandem: you sit in front, the pilot flies.

When

  • Time of day. Early. The air over the ridge is calmest between eight and ten; by late morning the valley wind is up, the ridge gets rough and pilots start turning people away. The first flights of the day are the smoothest and the shortest wait.
  • Season. March to June and September to November. The monsoon months of July and August are off — cloud on the ridge and rain on the meadow. In winter the meadow is under snow and the site runs only on clear, still days, when the ski slopes take over anyway.
  • Weather that cancels. Gusts, cloud on the ridge, rain. If the counters are quiet at nine on a clear morning, ask why before you pay.

What it costs

Typically ₹3,000–5,000 for a tandem flight, as of September 2026; longer flights from the higher launch cost more, and operators quote on the day. Prices move with the season and the crowd — a June weekend is dearer than an October weekday — and there is no fixed rate card. Ask for the receipt and confirm what the price includes: the jeep up, the flight, and the photos or video if you want them.

Operators

How people book it on the ground

Walk up from the car park to the counters. Say which flight you want, ask to see the pilot's licence and the reserve parachute, and check the harness fits before you pay. A jeep takes you and the pilot up the track to the launch; you run a few steps off the slope and you are flying. Landing is on the meadow, a short walk from where you started.

Safety, plainly

Tandem paragliding with a licensed pilot on maintained gear is a routine sport at Solang and the grass landing is forgiving. The things that go wrong are the things you can check: flying in gusts because the counter said it was fine, a harness that does not fit, a pilot without a licence, or a launch after the wind has turned. Fly early, ask, refuse, and it is a good morning.

Questions people ask

How much does paragliding cost in Manali?

A tandem flight from the ridge above Solang is typically ₹3,000–5,000, checked in September 2026; longer flights cost more and operators quote on the day at the counters above the car park, so treat any number as that morning's price. Ask for the receipt and check the harness and reserve before you pay.

Where exactly is paragliding done in Manali?

At Solang, the meadow 12 km north of town, about 24 min by road. Pilots launch from the ridge above the meadow and land on it; the counters that sell flights are above the car park. In season a second, shorter site runs from the slopes near Marhi on the Rohtang road, weather and permits allowing.

What is the best time of day and year to fly?

Early: the air over the ridge is calmest between eight and ten and rough by late morning, so the first flights of the day are the smoothest and the queue is shortest. The season runs from spring to autumn — March to June and September to November — with the monsoon months off and winter flights only when the meadow is clear.

Is paragliding at Solang safe?

Tandem flights with a licensed pilot on well-kept gear are a routine sport here, and the meadow landing is forgiving. The risks are the ones you can check: fly early when the air is calm, ask for the pilot's licence and the reserve, refuse a harness that does not fit, and never fly in gusts or cloud.
