Bijli Mahadev in a day from Kullu — the road to Chansari, the climb to the ridge and a late lunch in the bazaar

Bijli Mahadev is the walk the lower valley is known for: a ridge above the meeting of the Beas and the Parvati, with a wooden shrine, a stone courtyard and a tall staff that gives the temple its name. The climb is the day — a road to the village, then two and a half hours of walking, there and back.

The road on our map routes the last stretch as a track and reports nearly three hours of driving; ignore it. The way people actually go is the road to Chansari and the path from there, which is what this plan does and what our measured minutes describe.

Who this is for

Anyone comfortable with an hour and a half of climbing, and travellers who want one real walk out of a day in the valley. Not a plan for small children or a hot afternoon. For the town instead, take the one-day temples plan; for both, the two-day plan.

Day by day

Getting there

Start in Kullu: the ridge road leaves the highway, crosses the Beas and climbs 15 km to Chansari in about 28 minutes. Buses do not go up; a taxi with waiting is the usual arrangement, made the evening before in the bazaar. From Manali the town is 40 km and about 49 minutes down the river.

Where to stay

The night before matters more than the night after. The bazaar or Dhalpur puts you 28 minutes from the road-end for an early start; Raison, 15 km and 20 minutes up the valley, is the river alternative and adds a little to the morning drive.

Know before you go

• Start at first light in May and June; the upper half has no shade at all.
• Shoes with grip — the stone path is polished in places and loose in others.
• Carry water for the whole climb; the last shop is in the village at the road-end.
• The ridge is cold and windy whenever the town is warm; carry a layer even in June.
• Prices are bands checked in September 2026 and quoted on the day.

If plans change

Without the climb: the one-day temples plan stays in the town and its hill temple.

With a night: the two-day plan does the ridge one morning and the town the next.

On the river instead: the river and rafting plan spends both days on the water.
