Kullu or Manali — which one to sleep in, and what each is actually good at

They are not competing for the same visit

Kullu and Manali sit 40 km and about 49 minutes apart on the same river, and travellers treat the choice as a toss-up. It is not. Manali is a resort town at the head of the valley with the snow, the pass, the cafés and the crowds. Kullu is the district headquarters near the bottom of it, with the offices, the buses, the valley's ruling deity and almost no evening. Choosing well is a matter of knowing which of those you want to walk out into.

Choose Manali if

You want sights inside half an hour of the room: the old village, the temples, the meadow at Solang, the tunnel and the pass beyond it. You want cafés, rented bikes and something to do after dark. It is a first visit's town, and it is very good at being one — which is also why it is full in May, June and October.

Choose Kullu if

You want the temples and the ridge walk, you are flying in or out of Bhuntar, or you would rather sleep in a town that works for a living. Rooms are about ₹900–2,500 a night as of September 2026 and the food is priced for the people who eat it daily. The trade-off is honest: the evening is a bazaar and a river, not a night out.

• The airport — Kullu, 11 km and about 17 minutes; Manali is 49 minutes from it on a road that is slow in the morning.
• The ridge temple at [Bijli Mahadev](/places/bijli-mahadev-temple) — Kullu: 15 km to the road-end at Chansari, then an hour's climb.
• The pass, the tunnel, the snow — Manali, by a long way; none of it is a day from Kullu.
• [Raison](/places/raison) and the river camps — between the two, 15 km and 20 minutes above Kullu.
• The Parvati valley — Kullu is nearer the turning: Kasol is 39 km and about 79 minutes away.

In October, the answer changes

During the fair week the calculation inverts: Kullu is the most interesting town in the state and the hardest place to find a bed, and Manali becomes the sensible place to sleep and drive from.
