Kasol or Manali? The Parvati valley's case, honestly made, and when to choose the Beas

Two valleys, one district, two trips

Kasol and Manali are 75 km and about two hours apart, both reached through Bhuntar, and people who have not been to either ask which to choose as if they were two versions of one thing. They are not. The Parvati is a narrow valley with one road that ends at Barshaini, a loud river, and villages you walk to. The Beas is a wide valley with a town at the top of it, roads in three directions, a pass, and the activities and crowds that come with all that. What Kasol has

The river and the far bank at Chalal, twenty minutes on foot and the reason people stay longer than they meant to. The walks: Tosh an hour above the road-end, Kalga and Pulga in the orchards, Rasol up its side valley, and Kheerganga, the day up the valley to a hot spring with a night at the top. Manikaran, eight minutes away, with the gurdwara's tanks and its free langar. Cheap rooms, long café afternoons, and — outside the long weekends — quiet.

What Kasol lacks

Sights, in the coach-tour sense: there is no castle, no temple worth a detour, no snow point to drive to. Snow itself, except above Barshaini in deep winter. Any activity that needs a counter — no paragliding, no ropeway, no rafting on the Parvati (the rafting is on the Beas, below Kullu). Hotels rather than guesthouses. And a reason to be here without walking; someone who wants to see things from a car window should be on the Beas.

What Manali has

The drives — Solang, the Rohtang road in its season, the tunnel to Sissu and the snow beyond it — and the activities at Solang: flying, the ropeway, skiing in winter. The Hadimba temple in its grove, the hot tanks at Vashisht, the castle at Naggar on the left bank, the Mall. Who each suits

Kasol: walkers, couples who want a river and a terrace, solo travellers with a week and a book, anyone on a budget, anyone who has done Manali and wants the opposite. Manali: families with small children, first hill trips that want snow and a pass, anyone who needs a hotel with a lift, anyone with two days and a car who wants to see the most. Doing both

The five-day plan is built for it: two nights on the Parvati for Chalal, Tosh and Manikaran, the left-bank road through Naggar with the castle for lunch as the transfer, and two nights on the Beas for Solang, Vashisht and Hadimba. Kasol first if the bus lands you at Bhuntar in the morning; Manali first if the flight lands in the afternoon. The short version

Kasol if the trip is the walking and the river; Manali if it is the sights, the snow and the drives. Both if you have five days, in that order from the bus and the other order from the plane. Neither is the better valley — they are two, and the district is lucky to have both.
