Malana from Kasol — a day out to the village with its own rules, and how to behave there
A one-day plan from Kasol to Malana: taxi via Jari to the road-end, an hour's climb to the village, how to behave there, and back to the river by afternoon.
Malana is the valley's strangest day and the one that most needs telling beforehand. A village up its own gorge that has kept its own council and its own distance for as long as anyone has written about it. A visitor is tolerated on the village's terms: do not touch the temple or the people, do not enter a house, stay on the path. A fine is charged for touching, and it is collected. On those terms it is a good day — the road up the gorge, the climb, the position of the village on its shelf — and on any others it is a bad one.
The plan is a single day from Kasol with the evening back at the river. Every road minute is measured on the actual road; the taxi is arranged at the Kasol stand the evening before, and there is nothing to book. What the village is famous for outside the valley is not part of this plan or any we write, and the police act on it.

Who this is for
Anyone curious enough to accept the rules and fit enough for an hour's steep climb. Not for children who cannot keep their hands to themselves, and not for anyone who would find the terms offensive — skip it and take the Tosh day instead. It fits as the extra day on any Kasol stay of three nights or more.

Up the gorge, an hour on foot, and back for the river
A taxi from Kasol down to Jari and up the Malana road to the road-end, the climb to the village, an hour there on the terms the village sets, and back to Kasol by mid-afternoon with the evening free for the river.

Getting there
From Kasol only, by taxi: down to Jari and up the Malana road to the road-end, about 20 km and 43 minutes. The valley bus reaches Jari and no further. Anyone arriving from Bhuntar could turn off at Jari on the way up and reach Kasol in the evening, which makes the Malana day the first day of a trip rather than the last.
Where to stay
Kasol or Chalal, as for any Kasol day; the plan ends on the far bank. Malana has a few guesthouses at its edge, but a night there is not something the village encourages and not something we plan.
Know before you go
- Hands in your pockets on the path through the village. It sounds like a joke; it is the whole etiquette in one line.
- Prices are bands checked in September 2026; the Kasol taxi stand quotes on the day and the road-end has no taxis of its own.
- The climb is steep with steps; shoes, water, a hat, and a morning start before the heat.
- The village closes to visitors for its own festivals without notice — the Kasol drivers know the dates.
- Not in the monsoon, when the path is mud, and not in snow.

How do I get from Kasol to Malana?
By taxi from the Kasol stand: down to Jari, then up the Malana road's hairpins to the road-end above the dam, about 20 km and 43 minutes in all, typically ₹1,200–2,000 one way as of September 2026. From the road-end the village is about an hour on foot up a steep path with steps.
What are the rules for visiting Malana?
Do not touch the temple, its walls or the villagers; do not enter houses; stay on the path and the places you are shown; photograph the temple from a distance only. A fine is charged for touching, and it is collected. The village's council decides who may come and when, and closes the path for its festivals.
Is Malana worth visiting?
For the road up the gorge, the climb and the village's position on its shelf, yes, if you can accept its terms — and only then. It is a place with a long habit of keeping visitors at a distance, not a sight to consume. Anyone unsure should take the Tosh day instead and lose nothing.
Can I stay overnight in Malana?
A few guesthouses at the edge of the village take walkers, but the village does not encourage it and neither do we. This plan returns to Kasol by mid-afternoon; the valley's beds are in Kasol, Chalal and Tosh, and the evening is better spent by the river.
