A slow week in Kasol alone — one base, one walk a day, and nowhere to be
A week alone in Kasol is not seven days of sights; it is one base, one walk a day, and the rest of the time by the river. This plan sleeps in Chalal for six nights and alternates the hard days with the easy ones: the steep morning to Rasol, then the market; the long day to Kheerganga, then the hot tanks at Manikaran; the high villages, then the road. Nothing needs booking, every road minute is measured on the actual road, and the prices are the bands we last checked.
It is written for a solo traveller because that is who stays a week here, but it works for two who want the same rhythm. The order can move: take the Kheerganga night instead of the day, and shift the rest by one.

Who this is for
Solo travellers with a week and a book, and anyone who prefers one room to four. Not for anyone who needs a sight a day — this valley has three and a lot of paths. With less time, the three-day classic; with a laptop, the workation plan.
Day by day
Arrive, settle on the far bank
One room for the week, in Chalal, and the first afternoon to learn the path between it and the market. Nothing else.
- 13:00ChalalTwenty minutes over the footbridge and along the river. A room for six nights is easier to bargain than one — rooms are typically ₹800–2,500 a night in season as of Sep 2026 and a week gets a rate. Take the one that faces the water.
The easy day — the bridge, the market, the river
A day that establishes the routine. Breakfast on the path, the market for cash and fruit, the footbridge for the view, the river until the light goes.
- 10:00Kasol bridgeThe footbridge from the middle, upstream and down. The market at the top of the lane for the week's cash — draw it all now — and the bakeries for the afternoon.
- ↓ 6 min by road · 2 km13:00ChojAlong the far bank the other way, to the hamlet on the water at the end of the bridge road: lunch at a café, the camps and their bonfire ground, and the walk back to Chalal by the river.
Rasol — the steep morning
The valley's hard short walk from the doorstep: two to three hours up the side valley to a village with no road, tea, and the same path down by early afternoon.
- 08:00RasolStart before the sun reaches the upper slope. The path climbs from the village edge and does not stop; the shelf at the top has the whole side valley below it. Water, a hat, and nothing planned for the afternoon.
The long walk — Kheerganga and back in a day
With a week, the spring can be a day walk from the road-end rather than a night out — up early, the pool in the early afternoon, down by dusk. Or take the night, and shift the rest of the week by one.
- 12:30Kheerganga Hot SpringThe taxi to Barshaini by seven, typically ₹800–1,500 one way as of Sep 2026, then four hours up through Nakthan and past the Rudranag waterfall to the meadow and the pool, an hour there, and three down. A long day; the alternative is a camp at the top, typically ₹500–1,500 a head with dinner, and a slower descent tomorrow.
The day off — Manikaran
The legs get the day. Eight minutes up the road to the gurdwara and the hot tanks, the langar for lunch, and the afternoon back at the river.
- 10:00Gurudwara Sahib ManikaranHeads covered, shoes off: the tanks under the building for as long as the legs want, the langar for lunch, the steam over the river. Nothing to pay. Back to Chalal by the afternoon bus.
The high villages — Tosh, Kalga, Pulga
A taxi to the road-end and a slow day among the three villages above it: the climb to Tosh for the view, then across to the orchards and the deodar wood at Pulga, and Kalga on the way down.
- 09:30ToshAn hour up from the bridge at Barshaini to the village on its shelf; a long breakfast facing the range, and the old houses at the top.
- ↓ 1 h 18 min by road · 5 km13:00PulgaDown and across the stream to the wooden village in the orchards, and the deodar wood above it for the afternoon — the best sitting place in the valley.
- ↓ 1 h 3 min by road · 2 km16:00KalgaThe twin hamlet on the way down, a tea on a terrace, and the last twenty minutes to the road-end and the taxi.
Pack slowly, and the road
A last breakfast on the path, the bridge one more time, and the bus down the valley through Jari to Bhuntar.
- 11:30JariThe tea stop at the junction on the way out, 19 minutes below Kasol; the bus continues to Bhuntar in about an hour, where the airport and the Delhi buses are.
Getting there
Through Bhuntar, 32 km and about 70 minutes below Kasol; the overnight bus from Delhi's Kashmere Gate reaches Bhuntar in the morning and the valley bus does the rest. A week gives the arrival day away without regret. The plan ends on the same road, with a bus down through Jari in time for an evening departure from Bhuntar.
Where to stay
Chalal, one room, all six nights — a week's rate is easier to agree than a night's, and the walk home over the bridge becomes the day's punctuation. Choj, at the near end of the far bank, is the alternative for anyone who wants the camps and the company; Tosh is for a night away from the base if the high-village day turns into two.
Know before you go
- Draw the week's cash on the first morning; the ATMs empty on weekends and nothing above Kasol takes a card.
- Prices are bands checked in September 2026; a week's stay is quoted on the day and comes in under them.
- Alternate hard days and easy ones — Rasol, then the market; Kheerganga, then the hot tanks.
- A torch for the river path every evening; it is unlit under the trees.
- Tell someone at the guesthouse which walk you are on and when you expect to be back; the signal above Barshaini is unreliable.
If plans change
Two weeks with a laptop: the workation plan keeps the base and works from it.
The night at the top instead of the day: the Kheerganga plan shows the version with the camp.
Less time: the couples plan is this rhythm in three days.

Is a week too long for Kasol?
Not from one base with a walk a day: Chalal, Rasol, Kheerganga, Manikaran, Tosh, Pulga and Kalga fill six days without repeating, and the river fills the rest. It is too long for anyone counting sights, of which the valley has three; it is right for anyone who likes paths and a routine.
Is Kasol safe for a solo traveller?
As safe as any hill village for the usual care: the river is the hazard, fast and cold and not for swimming; the paths are for daylight; the taxi stand quotes on the day. Tell the guesthouse which walk you are on. The valley's other reputation is real and the police act on it.
Can I do Kheerganga as a day walk?
Yes, from the road-end at Barshaini by seven: four hours up, an hour at the pool, three down, back at the road by dusk. It is a long day and the pool is at its busiest at midday; with a week in hand, the night at the top and a slower descent is the better version.
