Rasol

What it is

A village with no road on a shelf above the side valley behind Chalal, two to three hours' climb from the river. Stone-and-timber houses, terraces for tea, a few homestays, and a position that makes the effort worth it: the whole side valley below, the main valley beyond, and nothing mechanical in earshot. It is the valley's hard short walk — the one for the day the legs want more than the river path.

Getting there

On foot from Chalal, which is itself twenty minutes over the footbridge from Kasol. The path leaves the village and climbs from the first minute up the side valley, through forest at first and then open slope, to the shelf. Two to three hours up, less down, the same path both ways. No guide needed in clear weather; ask in Chalal for the start of the path, which is easy to miss.

The day

Start by eight; the upper half is exposed and hot by noon. Tea on a terrace at the top, an hour to sit, and down by early afternoon to the river. The couples plan does it on its second morning and spends the evening in Manikaran's hot tanks, which is the right order.

When to go

March to June and September to November; October for the clearest sky. Not in the monsoon, when the path is mud and the exposed slope slides; not in snow, when the upper path is dangerous and the village mostly closed.
