Larji

What it is

The junction at the mouth of the Tirthan, where the road from the Aut tunnel splits under a welcome gate for the Sainj and Tirthan valleys and a dam holds the Beas below. Buses change here; the valley road proper begins past the dam.

Getting there

From Banjar, 20 km and 34 minutes down the valley road; from Aut on the highway, a few minutes up. The valley bus stops here, and the Sainj bus turns off.

The stop

Lunch at a dhaba above the water, the reservoir below, the two rivers meeting — twenty minutes on the way in or out. Anglers fish the wide water under the same licence as the upper river; the trout plan ends here.

When

Any month the roads are open. In the monsoon the reservoir is brown and the highway closes at Mandi and Pandoh after heavy rain.

Around it

Aut below on the highway. Sai Ropa, Nagini and Gushaini up the Tirthan road. The Sainj valley and Shangarh's meadow up the other road.
