Gushaini

What it is

The village where the road up the Tirthan reaches the river and the park: a bridge, a bazaar of a dozen shops, homestays along the water, and the path into the Great Himalayan National Park leaving from the far bank. Most of the valley's stays sit within a few kilometres of this bridge, and every walk on the river side starts from it.

Getting there

From Banjar, 10 km and 18 minutes along the river road past Sai Ropa and Nagini, by the valley bus or a taxi. From the highway at Aut, 24 km to Banjar first; a taxi from the turn is typically ₹1,200–2,000 one way as of September 2026. Homestays are typically ₹1,500–3,500 a night in season with meals, walk-in outside the long weekends, and a week gets a rate.

The day

The river path from the far bank in the morning; trout for lunch at ₹400–700 a plate; the afternoon on a terrace. The walks radiate from the bridge — the ecozone path towards the park's gate, Pekhri up the north slope, Sharchi across the river, the Chhoie waterfall above Nagini — and the park itself needs the permit from Sai Ropa and a guide.

When to go

March to June and September to November; October for the clearest water and skies. The monsoon turns the river brown and closes the park's walks; from December the park's high paths are under snow, though the village and the river road stay open and quiet.
