Sainj village

What it is

The road village at the mouth of the Sainj valley, where the side road leaves the Kullu highway and follows its own river east into the hills. A bazaar of a few shops, the bus stop, and the last bank before the road runs out. Everything further up the valley is reached through here.

Getting there

The turning is at Larji on the highway, 14 km and about 26 minutes below the village — allow 35. Aut, which every bus and taxi knows, is 17 km and about 30 minutes. Kullu is 46 km and about 68 minutes; Bhuntar's airport 35 km and about 54 minutes.

What to do here

Stock up and go on. Cash from the last bank, fuel, anything the homestays above will not have. It is the practical stop rather than the pretty one, and the valley's point is 17 minutes further up at Neuli and 26 at Shangarh.

Around it

Ropa and the park's gate are 13 minutes up the other arm of the fork; Dehuri is a hamlet on the south bank in between. Down the highway lie Aut and the tunnels, and across the river the Tirthan valley.
