Ropa

Ropa is where the Great Himalayan National Park is entered from the Sainj valley: the office, the permit, the guide rule, and where the road ends.

What it is

The hamlet where the Sainj valley road runs out and the Great Himalayan National Park begins. The park's office on this flank is here, with the forest rest house and a handful of houses; the permit for the Sainj approach is issued at the counter, and everything above is on foot.

Getting there

7 km and about 13 minutes from Sainj — allow 20. It is the shortest drive in the valley. Neuli, where the homestays are, is on the other arm of the fork.

The permit, and the rule

Issued in person, with separate charges for cameras, and a guide required beyond the ecozone. Nothing motorised passes the gate. The park fixes its own fees and closes areas by notice, which is why no page — including this one — prints a price for it: ask at the office on the day.

Above the gate

The path follows the river up into the Sainj Wildlife Sanctuary and on towards the villages that farm at that height — Shakti among them, which has no road to it at all. How far a day goes is the guide's call on the ground, and this site does not pretend otherwise.

When to go

April to June and September to October. The monsoon brings leeches, a river that rises fast and paths that are no fun; winter shuts the high routes with snow. The walk-in plan is built around those months.
