What it is

The town on the Beas where the Kullu highway enters its long tunnel and the Tirthan road turns off just before the tunnel mouth. Every bus and taxi for the valley leaves the highway here; the overnight bus from Delhi drops you at the turn at dawn.

Getting there

On the Kullu highway between Mandi and Bhuntar. From Banjar, 24 km and 40 minutes down the valley road. Bhuntar's airport is up the highway on the far side of the tunnel.

The change

Tea at the turn while the valley bus fills — typically ₹50–100 to Banjar as of September 2026 — or a taxi, typically ₹1,200–2,000 one way to Gushaini or Jibhi. The valley road passes Larji, where the Tirthan meets the Beas, a few minutes up, then Sai Ropa and Gushaini on the river, or Jibhi on the pass road.

When

Any month the highway is open; in the monsoon it closes at Mandi and Pandoh after heavy rain, and the valley road after slides.

How do I get from Aut to the Tirthan valley?

The valley road leaves the highway at Aut just before the tunnel mouth and runs 24 km and 40 minutes up to Banjar as of September 2026, then on to Gushaini or Jibhi. The valley bus from the turn is typically ₹50–100 to Banjar; a taxi typically ₹1,200–2,000 one way to Gushaini or Jibhi.

Does the Delhi bus stop at Aut?

The overnight buses from Delhi's Kashmere Gate towards Kullu and Manali pass through Aut before the tunnel, and most will drop you at the turn if you say so when booking. Ask for an Aut drop, not Kullu, since the tunnel puts Kullu on the far side. The return buses are caught at the same turn on the highway.

Is there anything to see at Aut?

Not much beyond the river and the tunnel mouth: it is a highway town with tea stalls, a bus stop and the taxi turn for the valley. The confluence at Larji and the dam are a few minutes up the valley road; the Pandoh reservoir is down the highway. Aut is the change, not the destination.
