How to reach the Sainj valley — the turning at Larji, the junction at Aut, and the road up the river

The short answer

Get yourself to Aut on the Kullu highway — every bus going up the Beas passes it — then take the Sainj road east off the highway at Larji. The Sainj village is 17 km and about 30 minutes from Aut, and everything else in the valley is reached from there.

The turning is the hard part

There is no signposted gateway. The valley leaves the highway at Larji, a confluence with tunnels, 14 km and about 26 minutes below the village. Watch the river rather than the road and you will be through the tunnels and halfway to Kullu before you notice. Aut is the landmark to aim at: ask for Aut, then for Sainj.

From each direction

• From Kullu — 46 km and about 68 minutes, down the Beas to Larji and up the river.
• From Aut — 17 km and about 30 minutes. The practical arrival point for anyone on a bus.
• From Bhuntar and the airport — 35 km and about 54 minutes.
• From Banjar and the Tirthan — 34 km and about 58 minutes.
• From Mandi — 54 km and about 86 minutes down the Beas gorge.
• From Chandigarh — 210 km and about 243 minutes of driving. From Shimla — 184 km and about 312 minutes over the hill roads.
• By rail — there is none. Joginder Nagar, 108 km and about 195 minutes away, is the nearest railhead and is a lovely journey rather than a useful connection.

By bus, honestly

Buses come into the valley from Aut and Kullu and run as far as Neuli, 10 km and about 17 minutes above the village where the road forks. Above Neuli the service thins to a few a day and then stops. For Shangarh — 14 km and about 26 minutes from the village, allow 35 — and for the park gate at Ropa, 7 km and about 13 minutes, most visitors take a taxi from the Sainj village or drive. Taxis run roughly ₹700–1,200 one way to the meadow as of September 2026, quoted on the day.

Nothing motorised goes past the gate above Ropa. Shakti, the last hamlet up the river, is a walk with a permit.

Where to point the car when you get there

If you have one night, sleep at Neuli or at the meadow and read the two-day plan. If you came to walk into the park, the permit is issued in person at Ropa and the three-day walk-in is the shape that works. Fill the tank and draw cash at the Sainj village: it has the last bank, and the homestays above it are not all on a card machine.
