Things to do in Sainj valley — 7 from the bazaar to the park gate, by distance
How this list is built
The Sainj valley climbs east from the Kullu highway at Larji towards the Great Himalayan National Park, and its sights are a meadow, a temple, a waterfall and the park's gate. This list is in order of our measured road time from Sainj, the bazaar at the foot of the valley.

Along the valley road
1. Sainj, the bazaar
Sainj is the junction village with the bus stop, the shops, the last bank and fuel before the valley road climbs. Stock up here; the homestays are further up.
2. Ropa, the park's gate
Ropa, about 13 min up the valley, is the end of the road and the national park's office on this side, with a forest rest house. Permits for walking into the park by this approach are issued here in person, and a guide is required.
3. Neuli, on the river
Neuli, about 17 min from Sainj, is where the valley opens out and the road forks, one arm to Shangarh and the other to Ropa. The homestays sit here on the river.
Shangarh and above
4. The Shangarh meadow
The meadow at Shangarh, about 26 min from Sainj, is the reason most people come up the valley: an open green ringed by deodar forest. The meadow is the deity's ground; read the rules of the meadow before you walk on it.
5. The Shanghchul Mahadev temple
The Shanghchul Mahadev temple stands at the edge of the meadow, built of deodar and stone under a slate roof, with carving on its front and a stone Nandi in the courtyard. Shoes come off near the temple.
6. Barshangarh Waterfall
The Barshangarh Waterfall is a walk on from the Shangarh meadow, up the side valley through deodar and apple terraces by the hamlets of Goshti and Dharali. There is no road to the water.
7. Pundrik Rishi Lake
Pundrik Rishi Lake, above Shangarh, is a lake that has closed over with grass and reed into a soft green floor. On our measured path it is about 120 min up from the road above the meadow and 74 down.
Plan it
The two days with Shangarh and the river covers the valley; the three-day park walk-in goes into the national park from Ropa. To choose between this valley and its neighbour, see Sainj or Tirthan; for the road, how to reach Sainj valley.

Questions people ask
What is there to do in Sainj valley?
Walk the meadow at Shangarh and visit the Shanghchul Mahadev temple at its edge, walk on to the waterfall at Barshangarh, climb to the grass-covered Pundrik Rishi Lake, and stay a night at Neuli by the river. Ropa, at the road's end, is the park's gate for walks into the national park.
How far is Shangarh from Sainj?
About 14 km and 26 min by our measure, up the valley road through Neuli and left at the fork; allow longer on the single-track road. The meadow and its temple are a short walk from the road. Barshangarh's waterfall is a walk on from the meadow, with no road to the water.
Do you need a permit to visit Sainj valley?
Not for the villages, the meadow or the road. Walking into the Great Himalayan National Park from this side needs a permit, issued in person at Ropa, where a guide is also required. Ask there for the routes open in the season; we publish no fees.
