Things to do in Kausani — the view, Gandhi's ashram, Baijnath and Bageshwar

Things to do in Kausani: the Himalayan view, Gandhi's Anasakti Ashram, the Lakshmi Ashram, the Pant museum, the Baijnath temples, Bageshwar and treks.

Kausani is a place to look at mountains and a base for a few quiet visits. A note first: we found no verified map points for the places in town, so we describe them but do not plan around them.

The view

The ridge is the point of the town. Wikipedia describes a panorama about 300 km wide, with Trishul, Panchachuli, Nanda Ghunti and Chaukhamba among the peaks seen. Go at sunrise.

In town

At the Anasakti Ashram, Mahatma Gandhi stayed for some days and wrote on the Gita. The Lakshmi Ashram, about 1 km away, was founded in 1946 by his follower Sarla Behn and is run by Kumaoni women. A museum to Sumitranandan Pant, the Hindi poet born in Kausani, keeps his papers, awards and everyday objects. Tea gardens lie about 5 km out on the Bageshwar road.

Temples down the valley

The Baijnath temples, a Katyuri group, are about 41 minutes away on our routing, and the Bagnath Temple in Bageshwar about 77 minutes.

Treks

Wikipedia names the Pindari and Kafni glacier treks among those that start near Kausani, and a walk to a cave temple at Rudradhari. We have no timed trails or permit details.
