The Spiti circuit in eight days — up through Kinnaur, out over Kunzum to Manali
The full Spiti circuit, run the way the altitude wants it: up slowly through Kinnaur, a week in the cold desert, and out over Kunzum to Manali. Night one is at Sarahan below its temple; nights two and three in the Baspa valley and at Kalpa; night four at Tabo after Nako; then three nights at Kaza for Dhankar, the Pin valley, Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham Bridge. The last day crosses Kunzum to Manali.

Who this is for
Friends or couples with eight days, a sturdy car or a hired driver, and no health trouble at height. It is a road trip with long driving days, not a trek.
Day by day
Day 1Shimla to Sarahan
1 stop
Shimla to Sarahan
Leave Shimla early for the long road up the Sutlej through Narkanda and Rampur. Sarahan sits above the river on a side road, and its temple is the reason to stop here rather than drive on.
- 16:00Bhimakali Temple, SarahanThe towered timber-and-stone temple of the old Bushahr rulers. Ask in the town first about which parts are open while the conservation work continues.
Day 2Into the Baspa valley at Sangla
1 stop
Into the Baspa valley at Sangla
Back down to the highway and up the side valley to Sangla, where Kinnaur's orchards and wooden villages begin. An easy afternoon after yesterday's drive.
- 15:00Kamru FortThe tower fort above Sangla, a short drive and a walk up through the old village. We have no measured time for that walk; allow an hour.
Day 3Chitkul, then on to Kalpa
2 stops · 15 min on the road
Chitkul, then on to Kalpa
Up the valley to its last village in the morning, then back down and across to Kalpa for the night, facing the Kinnaur Kailash range.
- 09:30ChitkulThe last village of the Baspa valley, with the river beside it and wooden houses up the slope.
- ↓ 15 min by road · 9 km12:30RakchhamThe village on the valley floor on the way back down, for lunch beside the river. Its lanes are not measured on our map.
Day 4Kalpa to Tabo, by way of Nako
2 stops · 1 h 38 min on the road
Kalpa to Tabo, by way of Nako
The day the green ends. The road climbs out of Kinnaur's gorges past Pooh to Nako, then drops to the Spiti river at Tabo. Carry water and snacks; the stops are few.
- 12:30Nako LakeThe small lake in the village of Nako, with its old monastery beside it. Lunch, and a slow walk to get used to the height.
- ↓ 1 h 38 min by road · 63 km17:30Tabo Monastery, Himachal PradeshThe monastery founded in 996, with its mud-walled halls and painted interiors. Evening is quiet; the main visit can wait for the morning.
Day 5Dhankar and the Pin valley, to Kaza
2 stops · 52 min on the road
Dhankar and the Pin valley, to Kaza
Up the Spiti river to Dhankar on its spur, a turn into the Pin valley, and Kaza by the evening. Tabo to Kaza alone is about 47 km and 67 min; the detours make the day.
- 10:00DhankarThe old fort monastery on its cliff above the meeting of the Spiti and Pin rivers.
- ↓ 52 min by road · 30 km14:00Kungri MonasteryThe Pin valley's monastery, built around 1330, in a side valley of its own.
Day 6Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham
3 stops · 32 min on the road
Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham
The classic Kaza day: the monastery on its hill, the high village beyond it, and the bridge over the gorge. Go slowly; Kibber is well above Kaza.
- 09:30Ki GompaKey Monastery, Spiti's largest, stacked on its hilltop above the river.
- ↓ 15 min by road · 7 km12:00KibberThe village on the high shelf at 4,270 m, at the edge of the wildlife sanctuary.
- ↓ 17 min by road · 3 km14:30Chicham BridgeThe bridge across the gorge between Kibber and Chicham, at 4,145 m.
Day 7Komic, and a slow day at Kaza
1 stop
Komic, and a slow day at Kaza
A rest day for the body before the high road out. The morning at the monastery above Komic, the afternoon in Kaza's market and monastery.
- 10:00Tangyud MonasteryThe monastery at Komic, one of the high villages above Kaza. We route this road by public OSRM, not our own router; ask in Kaza how the track is before going.
Day 8Over Kunzum to Manali
1 stop
Over Kunzum to Manali
The long day out. From Kaza the road climbs over Kunzum Pass, about 15,000 ft, and down to the Chandra valley and Manali. Kaza to Manali is about 479 km on our measured routing via the roads open in summer. Leave at first light and confirm the pass is open the evening before.
- 19:30Old ManaliThe lanes of cafés and guesthouses under the deodars, and a bed after a week at height.
Getting there
Start in Shimla; see how to reach Kaza for both roads into Spiti. The Manali road over Kunzum is open only in summer; from October the whole trip has to run in and out by Kinnaur, as Spiti in winter explains.
Where to stay
One night each at Sarahan, Sangla, Kalpa and Tabo, three at Kaza, one at Manali. Book Kaza ahead in July and August.
Know before you go
- Going up through Kinnaur and out over Kunzum is the gentler direction for the body: you gain height over several days instead of in one.
- Check Kunzum is open before the last day; it is normally open only from June or July to October or November.
- Foreign nationals should check the current permit rules for the border stretch near Nako before booking.

How many days do you need for Spiti valley?
Eight days from Shimla to Manali is a comfortable circuit: four days climbing slowly through Kinnaur to Tabo, three nights at Kaza, and a long last day over Kunzum. Seven is possible by dropping the Komic rest day, but a shorter trip leaves no spare day for a closed road.
Should I start the Spiti trip from Shimla or Manali?
From Shimla, if you can. The Kinnaur road gains height over several days, which gives the body time to adjust before Kaza at 3,650 m. Starting from Manali takes you over Kunzum, about 15,000 ft, on the first day. The Kinnaur road is also the only one open outside summer.
When is the Spiti circuit possible?
Only while Kunzum Pass is open, normally from June or July to October or November, depending on the weather and road clearing. July and August are the safest months for the full loop. Outside that window Spiti is reached and left by the Kinnaur road alone.
