How to reach Kaza — two roads, two very different seasons
Two roads, and only one works year-round
There is no quick way to reach Kaza — both routes involve a long day or more of driving, and picking the right one depends entirely on the season.
Via Manali (summer only)
The shorter, more direct route: from Manali, the road crosses Rohtang Pass to Gramphu, follows the Chandra river valley to Batal, then climbs over Kunzum Pass into the Spiti valley to reach Kaza. It's shut for the winter across roughly seven months, typically starting in October and reopening the following summer, once heavy snow on both high passes finally clears — check current conditions before committing to this route outside the warmer months.
Via Shimla and Kinnaur (open most of the year)
The longer route: NH505 follows the Sutlej river from Shimla, climbing to Nako before continuing along the Spiti River to Kaza. This road stays open year-round except for occasional closures from landslides or heavy snowfall — the reliable option outside the Manali road's summer window, at the cost of considerably more driving time.

By air
Bhuntar, near Manali, is the nearest airport to Kaza — about 431 km and roughly 12 hours by road when the Manali route is open. Flying in only helps if the onward road is actually passable; it doesn't shortcut the long final stretch either way.
Getting around once you're there
