Manali in June — everything open, everyone here, and how to still enjoy it

The month everything is open

June is the one month in which every single thing Manali is known for is running at once. Rohtang Pass has been open since May and still has snow at the roadside. The flying at Solang is at its best. The rafting on the Beas below Kullu is at its wildest with the snowmelt. The treks to Beas Kund and Bhrigu Lake have started. The tunnel is open, the cafés are open, the guesthouses are open, and days are the warmest of the year at about 26 °C.

It is also the month the whole of north India comes to escape the heat, and the school holidays put every family on the same road. June in Manali is a trade: everything open, for the fullest weeks and the highest prices of the year. This page is how to make the trade worth it.

What June has that no other month has

The pass with snow. The road over Rohtang is cut through the winter's fall in spring, and in June the walls of snow still stand at the roadside near the top and above Marhi — the photograph people come for. It needs the permit, one per vehicle from the district administration with a daily cap, and it needs a six o'clock start. The Rohtang or tunnel article weighs it; June is the one month in which the pass wins the argument for people who want snow and can bear the queue.

The snowmelt. Rehala Falls on the pass road and the falls at Jogini above Vashisht are loudest in June. The Beas is high and the rafting below Kullu is at its roughest, typically ₹500–1,500 per person as of September 2026 and quoted at the riverside counters. The rafting guide has the stretches.

The treks. Beas Kund and Bhrigu Lake run from late May, with snow still above the meadows in early June and the lakes half frozen — the wildest version of both. Fixed departures fill; book before you arrive. The Beas Kund plan is the shape.

Long days. Light from five to eight, which is what makes the early starts possible.

What June costs you

The crowd, in three places. The Solang road, which is a queue by ten and a car park by eleven. The Rohtang permit, which sells out days ahead on weekends, and the checkpost at Gulaba, where a June morning can lose an hour. And the town at dusk — the Mall shoulder to shoulder, the lane in Old Manali full, dinner a wait. Rooms cost most in June and the good ones in Old Manali go weeks ahead; taxis are at their highest posted rate; the counters at Solang know it is June.

The heat, mildly: at about 26 °C the afternoons in the town are warm enough that a shaded park and a roof are better than a road.

How to plan a June trip that works

Start every day at seven. Not eight. By seven the Solang car park is empty and the air over the ridge is calm for the flying; by ten it is neither. By seven the pass road is moving; by nine it is a line. The peak-season plan is built on this one rule.

Book the room and the permit before anything else. The permit as soon as the dates are fixed. The room weeks ahead: in Old Manali if you can get it, on the Solang road at Palchan or Kothi if you want the meadow twenty minutes from breakfast, or at the resorts south of the town for a family with a car. Our stays page shows what is left.

Do the drives on weekdays. Tuesday to Thursday is half the crowd of the weekend on the Solang road and at the checkpost. Keep the weekend for the town, the springs and the walks.

Keep the afternoons low. The shaded park at Van Vihar, the museum, the hot baths at Vashisht at four, the grove at the Hadimba temple in the last hour before dusk when the queue has gone.

Use the tunnel when the pass is sold out. Sissu through the Atal Tunnel needs no permit, takes an hour each way, and in early June still has snow on the high ground. It is the better first day in any month and the rescue in this one.

Consider Naggar. Naggar Castle, 19 km down the quiet bank, is cooler and emptier than anything on the Solang road, and the dhabas at Jana Falls are where the valley eats in June.

June with children

The school holidays are why June is full, and June with children works on the same rule as June with anyone: early starts, low afternoons, and the tunnel rather than the pass for anyone under ten. The kids guide sorts the valley by age; the kids plan is four days built without the high road.

What to pack

Warm days and cool nights — around 13 °C — so T-shirts and a fleece, with a shell for the pass, which is snow and wind whatever the town feels like. Shoes with grip for the Jogini path, whose stream crossings are full with melt. A hat and sunscreen for the meadow. Cash for the counters at Solang and the dhabas at Marhi, where the machines drop with the power. The packing article has the season-by-season list.

The honest verdict

If your dates are fixed by the school calendar, June is a good month made hard by the crowd, and the rules above make it work. If your dates are free, October has clear skies and the pass still open with a fraction of the people, and the best time article says so plainly. Either way, the Manali itineraries can be copied into your own trips and started at seven.

Questions people ask

Is June a good time to visit Manali?

It is the month when everything is open — the pass with snow still at the roadside, the flying at Solang, the rafting below Kullu, the treks from late May — and the month when the valley is fullest and most expensive. Days reach about 26 °C. A June trip works if every day starts early.

Is there snow in Manali in June?

Not in the town, which is green and warm; on the pass and above Marhi, yes, at the roadside where the road has been cut through the winter's snow, usually into the middle of the month and some years beyond. Sissu through the tunnel keeps snow on the high ground into early June.

How crowded is Manali in June?

As crowded as it gets: the school holidays and the heat of the plains send everyone up the valley at once. The Solang road is a queue by ten, the Rohtang permit sells out days ahead, the Mall is shoulder to shoulder at dusk, and rooms in Old Manali go weeks in advance. Weekdays are half the crowd of weekends.

Which is better, May or June for Manali?

May, slightly: the pass opens in the month, the snow at the top is deeper, the crowd builds through it rather than starting full, and the first half of May is still spring-quiet. June has warmer days — about 26 °C against 25 °C — and the treks running. Both need early starts; late June is the fullest fortnight.
