Manali with kids — four easy days

Four easy days in Manali with children: a river park and the temple grove, Solang's meadow, snow through the tunnel to Sissu with no altitude, and the forest.

Manali with children works if you refuse the long days. No Rohtang — the pass is high, cold and slow, and small children feel the altitude and the queues. No forced marches between sights. One thing in the morning, a rest after lunch, and an evening walk on the Mall for the caps and the dry fruit.

The plan keeps everything close: a river park and a temple grove on day one, the meadow at Solang on day two, snow on the Lahaul side of the Atal Tunnel on day three, and the forest and the Club House on the last day. The tunnel day is the one that would once have meant Rohtang; now it is an hour each way, no permit, and a village with a waterfall at the end.

Ages five to twelve is the sweet spot. Under-fives are happiest with days one and four repeated.

Who this is for

Families with school-age children, grandparents in tow, and anyone for whom the trip is about the children rather than the mountains. Not for teenagers who want paragliding and treks — the friends plan has those — and not for the monsoon weeks, when the tunnel road closes and the paths are mud.

Day by day

Day 1

A park, a temple, a museum

Short distances, one thing at a time, back for a rest after lunch.

  1. 10:00
    Van Vihar
    park · 3 min from Manali · about 3 h there
The deodar park by the river at the end of the Mall — paths, a small boating pond, room to run.
  2. ↓ 5 min by road · 2 km
    11:30
    Hadimba Devi Temple
temple · 1 min from Manali · about 45 min there
The cedar grove is the children's part; the temple queue is not. Walk the loop behind it.
  3. ↓ a short walk
    12:30
Museum of Himachal Culture and Folk Art
    museum · 5 min from Manali · about 1 h 30 min there
House models, masks and tools — half an hour that works for a curious eight-year-old.
  4. ↓ 6 min by road · 2 km
    17:30
    Mall Road
area · 3 min from Manali · about 30 min there
The evening walk; woollen caps and the dry-fruit counters.
Day 2

The meadow and the spring

Solang for the morning, an easy stop on the way back, and the afternoon off.

  1. 08:30
    Solang
    town · 21 min from Manali · about 3 h there
The meadow 12 km up the valley — space to run, the ropeway on a clear day (typically ₹500–800 return as of Sep 2026), ponies and zorbing in season. Leave before the crowd arrives.
  2. ↓ 15 min by road · 6 km
    12:30
    Nehru Kund
    hotspring · 8 min from Manali · about 1 h there
A roadside spring on the way back, a five-minute stop and a story about where the water comes from.
Day 3

Snow through the tunnel

The big day, without altitude. Through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu and back by mid-afternoon.

  1. 09:00
    Kothi
    town · 21 min from Manali · about 1 h 30 min there
The last village before the old climb; the gorge from the road, a tea stop.
  2. ↓ 35 min by road · 21 km
    10:00
    Atal Tunnel
road · 43 min from Manali · about 30 min there
8.8 km under the ridge — the children count the lights; the far end is a different season.
  3. ↓ 11 min by road · 10 km
    10:30
    Sissu
    town · 54 min from Manali · about 1 h 30 min there
Snow for most of the year, a waterfall across the valley, a lake below the road, tea in a village kitchen. Two hours.
Day 4

The forest and the river

A gentle last day close to the stay.

  1. 10:00
    Manali Sanctuary
    park · 1 min from Manali · about 3 h there
The deodar forest above the temple — an hour on the path from the gate, at a child's pace.
  2. ↓ 4 min by road · 2 km
    13:00
    Club House
    park · 4 min from Manali · about 3 h there
Indoor games, a skating rink, lawns by the river; the afternoon takes care of itself.

Getting there

With children the overnight bus from Delhi is a long night; if you drive, split the 513 km with a stop, and arrive the evening before day one. From Chandigarh it is 264 km of slow, winding road — motion-sickness tablets for the last hour through Mandi. Bhuntar airport is 49 km from Manali and about an hour by taxi; flights are few, so hold the road option.

Where to stay

A stay with a lawn beats one with a view. The Solang road at Palchan or Kothi has cottages with garden and river, twenty minutes from the tunnel; the Mall side has hotels with lifts and generators. Our stays page shows each on the map; the cafés page shows who does an early dinner — which matters by day three.

Know before you go

  • Keep the tunnel day for the middle of the trip, when everyone has settled, and start by nine; the Sissu side is cold even in June.
  • At Solang the ponies, zorbing and the ropeway are bought on the spot at prices that change with the season; agree the price and the time before anyone gets on.
  • The Vashisht hot springs are not on this plan on purpose: the public tanks are hot and basic and not for small children. Older ones can go with a parent.
  • Van Vihar's boating pond and paths are the easiest hour in town; go before the temple, not after.
  • Power cuts happen in snow and rain. A charged bank and a torch in the bag keep the evening simple.
  • Carry cash. Card machines above Solang and on the Lahaul side stop working when the power does.

If plans change

If the tunnel road is closed: day three becomes the snow line on the Solang road — as far as the road allows in the morning — and the Club House in the afternoon.

If the children are older: swap day four for the walk to Jogini Falls above Vashisht, which is in the waterfalls plan, and let them swim below the lower fall.

If you have a fifth day: Naggar Castle and lunch by Jana Falls — a low, slow day down the valley with a waterfall at the end.

Questions people ask

Is Manali good for a family trip with small children?

Yes, as long as the days stay short. The town has a river park, a temple in a cedar grove and a small museum within minutes of each other, the meadow at Solang is a morning out, and the tunnel gives you snow without altitude. What does not work with small children is Rohtang Pass — high, cold and slow.

Should we take children to Rohtang Pass?

Older children usually enjoy it; under-eights often do not — the altitude, the cold and the queues at the permit check make it a long day for a short time in the snow. The tunnel to Sissu gives the same snow at a lower height in half the time, with tea at the end. Save Rohtang for a later trip.

Which month is best for Manali with kids?

April and May for warm days, snow still on the high meadows and open roads; October for clear skies and quiet lanes; December for snow through the tunnel if everyone has proper layers. July and August bring the heaviest rain and closed roads, and June is the most crowded month at Solang.

What activities are there for children at Solang?

The meadow itself — space to run — plus ponies, zorbing and a ropeway in season, all bought on the spot from counters above the car park at prices that move with the season. Agree the price and the duration before anyone gets on. In winter there are short beginner ski slopes when the snow holds.
