Close to town
1. The tea gardens
About 3 minutes and 1 km from the centre: terraced estates at the town's edge, with the Dhauladhar range behind them. Tea took to the climate, and European estate owners expanded the gardens from the mid-19th century. Go in the morning. Palampur tea gardens.
2. Andretta
About 19 minutes and 9 km away: an artists' village below the Dhauladhar. The Irish theatre artist Norah Richards made it her home in 1924, building a mud-and-slate house called Chameli Niwas. The painter Sobha Singh and the potter Gurcharan Singh followed. It is a walk, not a sight list.

3. Gopalpur Zoo
About 23 minutes and 13 km away, on the road toward Dharamshala: one of Himachal's three recognised zoos, set among maple and horse chestnut. Its animals include the Asiatic lion, leopard, Himalayan black bear and sambar deer.
4. Baijnath Temple
About 30 minutes and 16 km away: a Nagara-style stone temple to Shiva as Vaidyanatha, built in 1204 AD by the merchants Ahuka and Manyuka. Its inscriptions are in Sharada and Takri scripts, and by tradition Dussehra has never been celebrated here. Baijnath Temple.
5. Sherabling monastery
About 57 minutes and 27 km by road: a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Bir–Baijnath area. It has no page here, because we have no verified facts and no proper photograph for it, so treat it as an add-on for a third day.
