Gyuto Monastery
Gyuto Monastery in Sidhbari, near Dharamshala, is a Tibetan tantric college where the 17th Karmapa lived after his dramatic escape from Tibet.
What it is
A Tibetan Buddhist tantric college in Sidhbari, near Dharamshala, founded in Lhasa in 1475 and re-established here after 60 monks fled Tibet in 1959. It's one of the two great tantric colleges of the Gelug tradition, the other being Gyume.

Getting there
About 21 minutes by road from McLeod Ganj, in Sidhbari — a different direction from the day trips towards Kangra Fort.
The visit
The monastery's more recent history is its most striking: the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, lived here for most of the years between his own dramatic escape from Tibet in 2000 and 2017. The monks are also known internationally for a tradition of overtone chanting — a single voice sustaining more than one pitch at once — recorded with musicians including Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, and heard on the Van Halen album Balance. A visit here is quieter and less crowded than McLeod Ganj's own temple, with its own distinct history to take in.
