What it is
The Dalai Lama's residence since he settled in exile in McLeod Ganj in 1960, and the site of Namgyal Monastery — the largest Tibetan temple outside Tibet itself. Monks in maroon robes move between the main temple hall, the smaller shrine rooms and the circumambulation path around the complex's edge, where prayer wheels line the wall.

Getting there
The complex sits a short walk from the Mall in McLeod Ganj — most visitors reach it on foot from wherever they're staying in town, or by a short taxi ride if starting from further out.
The visit
The main temple hall holds a large Buddha statue and the Dalai Lama's own teaching seat, used when he is in residence and holding public teachings. A circumambulation path — the kora — runs around the outside of the complex; walking it clockwise, spinning the prayer wheels as you pass, is the customary way to complete a visit. Most visits run forty-five minutes to an hour.
When to go
Any time of year — the complex is indoors and covered in the parts that matter most. The town around it is most pleasant March to May and September to November, outside the monsoon and the coldest winter weeks.

The Mall is a short walk away, with cafés and Tibetan handicraft stalls. Bhagsu Falls and the Triund trailhead are a short drive further out.

Is the Dalai Lama's temple free to enter?
Yes, entry is free for everyone. Expect a security check at the gate — bags are scanned and you'll pass through a metal detector, similar to airport security, before entering the complex itself. No advance booking or ticket is needed for an ordinary visit.
Can I see the Dalai Lama here?
Not on a typical visit. The complex is his residence and the site of Namgyal Monastery, but public audiences are rare, scheduled events, not something a visitor can plan around or expect on an ordinary day. The monastery and temple hall are open regardless of whether he is in residence.
What should I wear to visit?
Modest dress, the same as for any active place of worship — shoulders and knees covered. Photography rules vary by area of the complex; posted signs at each hall make clear where cameras are and aren't allowed, so it's worth checking before raising a phone inside any hall.
