How this list is built
Sorted by distance from Keylong's own bazaar, because that's how a day here actually gets planned: what's a short hop, what needs the Tandi bridge crossing, what's a half day further up the highway. The minutes are our own road routing; the prices are typical local bands with the date checked, never a booking — pay on the ground. Closest to the bazaar
1. Shashur Monastery
A short drive up a pine-covered slope from Keylong's own bazaar — under fifteen minutes. Founded by a lama from Ladakh in the 17th century; free to visit, with a modest donation customary. Its Tseshe festival runs June–July. Shashur Monastery.
Across the Bhaga river
2. Kardang
Once the capital of Lahaul, across the river via the Tandi bridge — about 27 minutes by road despite facing Keylong directly. Holds the valley's largest monastery, founded roughly 900 years ago. Kardang.
3. Tayul Monastery
A short drive above Satingri village, on the same side of the river as Kardang. A quieter stop, with a 12-foot Padmasambhava statue and a mani wheel local tradition says turns on its own. No dedicated page yet — ask locally for directions, or add it to a Kardang day.
Further out — Gondhla
4. Guru Ghantal Monastery
Local tradition traces this monastery's history to Padmasambhava in the 8th century — older than any of Keylong's own. A copper vase found nearby in 1857 is now in the British Museum. Guru Ghantal Monastery.
5. Gondhla Fort
A short walk from Guru Ghantal: the fortified seat of the Thakurs who once ruled this stretch of the valley. No fixed ticketing, no set hours — a modest, unstaffed visit. Gondhla Fort.
Up the Manali–Leh highway
6. Sissu
About 50 minutes from Keylong, on the way to the Atal Tunnel: a waterfall across the Chandra river with the 5,870 m peak Ghepan Goh behind it, plus a small lake and helipad. Sissu.
7. Jispa and Darcha
Further up the same highway, roughly 37 and 55 minutes from Keylong respectively — quiet riverside halts for travellers continuing towards Baralacha La and Ladakh, each worth a look on their own even for a shorter trip. Jispa · Darcha.
What it adds up to
Shashur, Tayul and Kardang: one day, no long drives. Guru Ghantal and Gondhla Fort: a second day, a little further out. Sissu, Jispa and Darcha: a third day up the highway, only possible roughly June to October when the road stays open. What are the top things to do in Keylong for a first visit?
Shashur Monastery, a short drive from the bazaar, then Tayul and Kardang across the river — three monasteries, one day, no permit required for any of them. Guru Ghantal Monastery and Gondhla Fort further out are the natural second day for anyone staying longer than that.
What can you do in Keylong for free?
All of it, in the sense that none of the monasteries or Gondhla Fort charge an entry fee — a modest donation is customary at each, not required. What costs money is the taxi between stops, since there's no local bus network connecting these villages.
How many days do you need to see Keylong?
One day covers the three closest monasteries. Two adds Guru Ghantal Monastery and Gondhla Fort. A third day reaches Sissu, Jispa and Darcha further up the Manali–Leh highway, each worth a look even for someone not continuing to Ladakh.
Is there anything to do in Keylong outside the main season?
Keylong's own monasteries stay open year-round now that the Atal Tunnel keeps the town reachable in any season. Sissu, Jispa and Darcha are the exception — the road north closes for winter, so those three are only reachable roughly June to October.
