The monasteries of Lahaul — a guide to Keylong's gompas
Four monasteries, one lineage
Lahaul's best-known monasteries — Shashur, Kardang, Tayul Monastery and Guru Ghantal — are all Drukpa Kagyu institutions, part of a Tibetan Buddhist lineage that traces back to the Gyalwang Drukpa at Hemis Monastery in Ladakh. Each has its own founding story and its own reason to visit.
Shashur — the closest, and the easiest first stop
A short drive from Keylong's own bazaar, founded by a lama from Ladakh, Dawa Gyatsho, in the 17th century. Its name — "amidst blue pines" in the local dialect — describes the forest it sits within. Its Tseshe festival, which falls each year in the June–July window, brings masked dances and draws villagers from across the valley.
Kardang — the valley's largest, across the river
Once the capital of Lahaul, Kardang's monastery is the biggest and most historically important in the valley, founded roughly 900 years ago and renovated in 1912. Its library holds a substantial collection of Buddhist scripture, including the Kangyur and Tangyur.
Tayul — quieter, with a self-turning wheel
A short drive above Satingri village, less visited than Kardang or Shashur. Inside: a 12-foot Padmasambhava statue and a giant mani wheel local tradition says turns by itself on special occasions.
Guru Ghantal — the oldest, near Gondhla
Local tradition and the terma literature trace this monastery's history back to Padmasambhava himself in the 8th century — older than any of the others. A copper vase found nearby in 1857 is now in the British Museum, cited as evidence of a still older monastic presence, possibly from the Kushan era.

Questions people ask
Which of Lahaul's monasteries should I visit first?
Shashur Monastery, closest to Keylong at about 15 minutes' drive, works well as an introduction. From there, Kardang and Tayul across the river, and Guru Ghantal further out near Gondhla, add depth and older history the closer stop doesn't have.
Are all of Lahaul's monasteries the same Buddhist sect?
