What it is
A village on the left bank of the Bhaga river, facing Keylong across the valley, and once the capital of Lahaul before the district headquarters moved to Keylong itself. Kardang's monastery — a huge, white, prayer-flag-draped building below a ridge — is the largest and most important in the valley, founded roughly 900 years ago.

Getting there
The village faces Keylong directly, but no bridge crosses the river at that point — the road runs via the Tandi bridge, adding real distance to what looks like a short hop on a map.
The visit
The monastery holds a large library of Buddhist scripture, including the Kangyur and Tangyur, and was renovated in 1912 by Lama Norbu after roughly eight centuries of use. It's also, notably, one of the few Himalayan monasteries to have featured on international television — a 2010 episode of the History Channel's IRT Deadliest Roads showed a trucker delivering a large golden Buddha statue here. Beyond the monastery, the village itself is worth a slow walk — narrow lanes, mani walls, and views back across the river to Keylong.

How do I get to Kardang from Keylong?
Despite facing Keylong directly across the river, there's no bridge close by — the road runs via the Tandi bridge, about 27 minutes by car even though the straight-line distance across the water is much shorter than the drive itself.
Can I see the Kardang monastery's library?
The monastery holds a large collection of Buddhist literature, including the Kangyur and Tangyur scriptures. Whether the library itself is open depends on the monks present that day — ask at the gate rather than assuming access is guaranteed on arrival.
