A single day for anyone based in Keylong with one free morning and afternoon — the valley's three closest monasteries, none of them more than half an hour's drive from the bazaar. Shashur Monastery sits almost within walking distance; Tayul Monastery and Kardang, across the river, round out the day without needing an early start or a long drive.

Getting there

Know before you go
- Taxis in Keylong are shared or hired for the day rather than metered — agree a price before setting out.
- Monasteries observe their own prayer schedules; if you want to see monks chanting, ask locally what time that day's session runs.
- Carry cash — none of these stops take cards, and change can be limited in the smaller villages.

Can you see Keylong's monasteries in one day?
The three closest — Shashur, Tayul and Kardang — yes, comfortably, none more than half an hour's drive from the bazaar. Guru Ghantal Monastery and Gondhla Fort, further along the valley, need at least one more day to add in properly.
Is Kardang far from Keylong?
It's across the Bhaga river, reached via the Tandi bridge — about 27 minutes by road even though it faces Keylong directly across the valley. There's no bridge any closer connecting the two towns, so the loop takes longer than the straight-line distance suggests.
Do the monasteries charge an entry fee?
No — Keylong's monasteries are active places of worship, not ticketed sites. A modest donation is customary and welcomed at each one, but nothing at all is required to enter, look around inside, or photograph the main prayer hall respectfully.
