The best time to visit Keylong and the Lahaul valley
A valley with two very different roads
Keylong itself has been open year-round since the Atal Tunnel replaced the old Rohtang Pass crossing in 2020. The monasteries around town — Shashur, Kardang, Guru Ghantal — are visitable in any season the tunnel itself is passable. The road further north, towards Sissu, Jispa and Darcha and on to Baralacha La, is a different story: it still closes for winter.
April to June — the valley opens up
The road north towards Baralacha La typically reopens for the season somewhere in this window, depending on that year's snow clearance. Record highs at the nearby Kyelang station climb steadily — from the low twenties in April past 30°C by June at the extreme end — though these are records, not typical daily highs; expect a genuinely cool climate even in the warmest stretch. This is the window for reaching all of Sissu, Jispa and Darcha without a gamble on road conditions.
July and August — the driest months here, oddly
Unlike most of Himachal, Lahaul sits north of the main Himalayan range, so the monsoon barely reaches it — June's rainfall (25.8 mm on record) is actually the lowest of the year at Kyelang, and July and August stay relatively dry too. This makes midsummer a reliable window here, in contrast to lower Himachal where the same months bring the heaviest rain.
September and October — clear and cooling fast
The classic window for the monasteries and a full run up the highway: clear skies, cooling temperatures, and the road north still open before winter closes it. Rainfall drops to some of the lowest monthly figures on record (25.8 mm in November) as the season turns.

November to March — Keylong stays open, the valley beyond doesn't
Kyelang's own record lows fall to -30°C in January, and while daily reality is less extreme than that record, this is a genuinely cold season. The Atal Tunnel keeps Keylong itself reachable, and the five monasteries around town remain visitable, but Sissu, Jispa, Darcha and everything beyond close for the winter until the road reopens the following year.
