Offbeat places near Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj — 9 beyond the main street

Nine offbeat places near Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, from a hillside cricket ground to a quiet lake and an old fort, each with measured drive times.

How this list is built

"Offbeat" here means off the Namgyal–Bhagsu–Triund line that most first visits follow. Every place below has its own page on this site and a public road or path to it. The minutes are our own road routing from the centre of Dharamshala, sorted nearest first. Where a place belongs with a neighbour, we say so, so the day makes sense on a map.

Questions people ask

What are the offbeat places near Dharamshala?

Nine that we have written up: the cricket stadium, Dharamkot, St John in the Wilderness, Norbulingka Institute, Dal Lake, Naddi, Gyuto Monastery, Chamunda Devi Mandir and Kangra Fort. Each has its own page with measured drive times, and none needs more than a short taxi ride.

Which of these are closest to McLeod Ganj?

The stadium, Dharamkot and St John in the Wilderness are all within about 12 minutes by road of our reference point in town. Norbulingka, Dal Lake and Naddi are 14 to 18 minutes, and Gyuto Monastery is 21. Kangra Fort and Chamunda Devi Mandir are the long drives.

Can you combine these in one day?

Yes, in clusters. Dharamkot, Naddi and Dal Lake share the hill above McLeod Ganj and make a relaxed half day, while Norbulingka and Gyuto share the Sidhpur side. Kangra Fort and Chamunda Devi Mandir are better as a separate half day by car.
