McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala town — where should you stay?

McLeod Ganj has the temple, the Mall and the Triund trailhead. Dharamshala town is the district headquarters. Here's the real difference, and which one to book.

Same district, two very different stays

"Dharamshala" is the name most visitors use, but almost none of them mean the district town when they say it — they mean McLeod Ganj, the hill town a short drive above it. Knowing which one you're actually booking matters more than the name on the listing suggests.

McLeod Ganj — for almost everyone

The Dalai Lama's temple, the Mall's cafés and Tibetan handicraft stalls, most of the district's guesthouses, and the Triund trailhead are all here. It's higher, cooler and considerably more alive after dark than the town below — the reason nearly every visitor, first-timer or not, ends up basing themselves here rather than in Dharamshala proper.

Dharamshala town — mainly a transit point

This is the district headquarters: government offices, the bus stand for long-distance routes, and comparatively little reason for a visitor to linger after arriving. A handful of budget travellers stay here for lower prices and take a daily taxi up to McLeod Ganj, but it's a trade most people decide isn't worth the extra travel time once they've seen the difference.

The practical difference

A short taxi ride connects the two, so neither choice is a disaster. But staying in McLeod Ganj means walking to the Dalai Lama's temple, the Mall and the Triund trailhead, while staying in Dharamshala town means a taxi for all three, every day of the trip. Do most visitors stay in McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala town?

McLeod Ganj, by a wide margin. It's where the Dalai Lama's temple, the Mall, most guesthouses and cafés, and the Triund trailhead all are, while Dharamshala town below is mainly government offices with comparatively little for a visitor to do after dark.

Is Dharamshala town worth visiting at all?

Mainly as a transit point — it's where long-distance buses and the road from Pathankot arrive before the final climb to McLeod Ganj. A handful of travellers base themselves there for lower prices, accepting the daily taxi ride up.
