The best time to visit Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, month by month
One town, four very different climbs
Dharamshala sits at 1,457 m, but Triund above it climbs well past that, and the two don't share a season the way a valley floor and its market usually do. The numbers below are the India Meteorological Department's normals for Dharamshala itself; McLeod Ganj, a short drive up, runs a little cooler again, and Triund colder still.
March to May — warming fast, range still snow-streaked
Days climb from 17°C to 31°C across the three months, nights from 6°C to 19°C. This is the run-up to summer: the temple and the Mall are comfortable, and the Dhauladhar keeps its snow into April, which makes for the sharpest photographs of the year against a green foreground. Triund is usually clear of snow by mid-April, opening the full climb.
June to September — the monsoon
Days stay warm, 27–31°C, but the rain is the story: July and August average 859mm and 942mm respectively, the wettest months by a wide margin. The Triund trail carries real landslip risk after heavy rain, and multi-day stretches of cloud can hide the range entirely even for someone who makes the climb. The town itself carries on — the temple, Norbulingka Institute and the cafés are unaffected, and rooms are at their cheapest.
October and November — the clear months
Rainfall drops sharply — October averages just 53mm — and days sit at a comfortable 22–26°C with nights of 10–14°C. This is the best combination of clear views and a dry trail the year offers, and it's when Triund is most reliably worth the climb. The three-day classic plan is built for this window.
December to February — cold in town, snow above it
Days of 16–18°C, nights down to 6–7°C in McLeod Ganj itself, with snow possible but rarely settling at the town's own elevation. Triund is a different matter — snow up there is common and some hikers plan around exactly that, though it calls for real boots and layers rather than sneakers and a light jacket.
The short version
