Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj in winter — where the snow falls, and what to do

Dharamshala in winter, from IMD normals: snow and sleet in upper McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Naddi, little in the lower town; what is open, Triund, what to pack.

Two towns, two winters

Dharamshala is really two places on one hillside, and in winter the difference matters. The lower town sits at 1,457 m and stays mild: on the IMD normals January days average 16.0 °C and nights 5.9 °C, and the record low is only −1.9 °C. Wikipedia notes that lower Dharamshala gets little frozen precipitation except hail. Upper Dharamshala is another matter: in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Naddi, snow and sleet are common in winter.

Winter runs from December to late February. Above both towns the Dhauladhar range is white for most of it, though Wikipedia adds that in recent dry spells the range has been losing its snow cover, so a bare winter is possible.

When to go for what

December, for clear days. December is the driest of the three winter months on the record, 36.6 mm of rain and snow against 83.6 mm in January and 128.3 mm in February. That means more sharp, clear days with the range bright behind the town and cold, still nights. It is the month for walking and views, not for snow in town.

January and February, for a chance of snow. The wetter months bring the weather systems that drop snow on McLeod Ganj and Naddi. Nights are coldest in January, at 5.9 °C on the lower town's record and colder up the hill. Keep the dates loose if snow is the point.

What to do in the cold months

The Dalai Lama temple complex and the Tibet Museum beside it are in McLeod Ganj and work in any weather. The walk to Bhagsu, about 14 min from the lower town by road, is short; its rocks can be icy in winter, so keep to the path. Naddi, about 3 km beyond McLeod Ganj, is the viewpoint for the white range at sunset. In the lower town, Norbulingka and the tea gardens make a calm day, and Kangra Fort, about 37 min away, is lower and warmer still.

Triund in winter. Triund sits at 2,850 m above McLeod Ganj, and in winter the upper trail can carry snow and ice that linger into spring. Do not plan it as a fixed day. Ask in McLeod Ganj that week how the path is, start early, wear shoes that grip and turn back if it is icy. Our Triund trek guide has the route in normal conditions.

Getting there and getting around

Gaggal (Kangra) airport is about 15 km and 30 min from the town; Pathankot, the nearest railhead, about 86 km. From Chandigarh it is about 228 km by road and from Delhi about 480 km, which most people do on the overnight bus. Fog on the plains in December and January delays early-morning starts and some flights, so leave room either side. After snow, the steep roads up to McLeod Ganj and Naddi are slow until they are cleared; the lower town's roads are rarely affected. See how to reach Dharamshala.

Questions people ask

Does it snow in McLeod Ganj?

Yes, in some spells. Wikipedia notes that snow and sleet are common in winter in upper Dharamshala, which includes McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu Nag and Naddi, while the lower town gets little except hail. Winter runs from December to late February, and the higher you sleep, the better your chance of waking to snow.

How cold is Dharamshala in January?

On the IMD normals for the town, January days average 16.0 °C and nights 5.9 °C; the record low is −1.9 °C. McLeod Ganj, higher up the hill, is colder than these figures, so pack thermals, a warm jacket and gloves for the evenings, and ask for a heated room.

Can you do the Triund trek in winter?

Only with care and local advice. Triund sits at 2,850 m above McLeod Ganj, and in winter the upper trail can carry snow and ice that stay well into spring. Ask in McLeod Ganj about the state of the path that week, start early, wear shoes that grip, and turn back if it is icy.

Is December a good time to visit Dharamshala?

For a quiet, clear trip, yes. December is the driest of the winter months on the record, 36.6 mm of rain against 128.3 mm in February, so it brings more sharp, clear days with the range white behind the town. It is cold at night but rarely snowy in the lower town.
