How to reach Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

The short answer

Fly into Gaggal, take an overnight bus from Delhi, or drive in from wherever else in Himachal the trip already has you. McLeod Ganj itself has no airport or station of its own — every route ends with a short final climb from Dharamshala town or from Gaggal.

By air

Gaggal (Kangra) Airport is the nearest, about 15 km and 30 minutes from Dharamshala town, with a further short drive up to McLeod Ganj. Flight frequency is limited and mostly routes through Delhi, so it's worth checking the day's schedule rather than assuming several options — a missed flight here can mean a full extra day.

By rail

There's no station at Dharamshala. The nearest useful railhead is Pathankot, about 86 km and two hours away by road, on the broad-gauge network with regular connections to Delhi and beyond. A narrow-gauge line runs closer, to Kangra town, but journey times and frequency make the Pathankot–taxi combination the more practical choice for most visitors.

By road

• From Delhi: about 480 km, 10–12 hours by car or overnight bus — the overnight HRTC or private bus from ISBT is the route most first-time visitors take, arriving in McLeod Ganj by morning without losing a travel day.
• From Chandigarh: about 228 km, roughly 4.5 hours by car or bus.
• From Pathankot: about 86 km, 2 hours — the rail-to-road leg described above.
• From Shimla: about 238 km, a little under 7 hours, mostly on hill roads.
• From Manali: about 232 km, around 6.5 hours, also on hill roads with several passes of driving to allow for.

Getting around once you're there

McLeod Ganj itself is walkable; taxis and a handful of shared jeeps cover the short hops to Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Naddi and Norbulingka Institute. Triund has no vehicle access at all — it's reached on foot from town.
