The best time to visit Kaza and the Spiti valley
A short window, and two different roads
Kaza is reachable year-round by one road or another, but the circuit around it — Kibber, Dhankar and everything further out — really only opens for a few months each year. Knowing which road is open when matters more here than at almost any other hub.
May and June — the road reopens
The Manali route over Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La typically reopens for the season somewhere in this window, depending on that year's snow clearance — there's no fixed date. The Shimla–Kinnaur route stays open through it regardless. Early in this window, some of the higher villages and their guesthouses may still be getting back up and running after winter.
July to September — the main season
Both roads open, the warmest weather of the year, and every stop on the circuit reachable. January's record low at Kaza's own station reaches -30°C; July averages around 15°C — the two sourced data points for a town where no full monthly table is published. Even in the warmest month, nights can still fall towards freezing at this altitude, so pack layers regardless of the season.
October — the road starts closing
The Kunzum La route towards Manali typically closes for the season somewhere in this window; exactly when varies year to year with the first heavy snowfall. The Kinnaur route stays open longer, so a late-season visit should plan around Shimla rather than Manali as the way in and out.

November to April — closed on one side
The Manali road is shut for roughly seven months. Kaza remains reachable only via the longer Shimla–Kinnaur route, and most guesthouses in the outlying villages close for the season regardless of road conditions, since there's little reason for them to stay open with the circuit itself impractical to visit.
