Jalori Pass in October and November — Shoja as the base, Serolsar at dawn, Raghupur at sunrise, and Bahu lake on the way down

The Jalori ridge in its clearest months: Shoja as the base, the ridge walk to Serolsar lake at sunrise, Raghupur Fort at first light, Bahu lake on the road.

October and November are the valley's clearest months — the monsoon washed out, the snow not yet down, the oaks on the Jalori ridge turning — and this plan spends them where the light is: on the pass. Shoja is the base because it is half an hour nearer the walks than Jibhi and colder, which in these months means clear. The lake at dawn and the fort at sunrise are the two frames the valley is known for.

The road minutes are measured on the actual road; the walks were measured on the path. The taxi driver at Shoja will do the dark starts if asked the evening before.

Who this is for

Photographers, walkers who want the two Jalori walks with the best light on each, and anyone who has done the river side and wants the pass in its season. Not for people who hate early starts; the Jibhi and Jalori two days does the fort at a civilised hour.

Day by day

Day 1

Up to Shoja, and the pass at the end of the day

Arrive up the pass road by early afternoon, a room at Shoja, and the taxi on up to Jalori for the last two hours of light on the ranges.

  1. 13:00
    Shoja
    town · 28 min from Banjar · about 1 h 30 min there
The last village below the pass, 28 minutes above Banjar: guesthouses on the bend, typically ₹1,000–3,000 a night in season as of Sep 2026, cold nights, and the earliest start for the walks.
  2. ↓ 12 min by road · 6 km
    15:30
    Jalori Pass
pass · 40 min from Banjar · 4 min on foot · about 20 min there
The meadow at the top of the road, 40 minutes from Banjar: the temple, the dhabas, and the ranges to the north going gold and then pink. Back to Shoja after the light.
Day 2

Serolsar at first light

The taxi to the pass in the dark and the ridge path to the lake for sunrise — the water is glass before the breeze gets up. Back for a late breakfast at the dhabas and the temple.

  1. 06:00
    Serolsar Lake
    lake · 40 min from Banjar · 1 h 43 min on foot · about 1 h there
From the pass, about 5 km along the ridge — 103 minutes up and 71 down by our measure — to the round lake with the Budhi Nagin temple on its bank. The reflection is the reason for the hour; the oaks turn through October.
  2. 11:00
    Jalori Pass Temple
temple · 40 min from Banjar · about 45 min there
Back at the pass, the temple and breakfast at the dhabas. The afternoon is for the terrace at Shoja and the light on the ridge.
Day 3

Raghupur at sunrise, then Bahu lake and the road down

The fort for sunrise — an hour's climb from the pass in the dark — then down the whole pass road, with Bahu lake in the fields above Banjar as the last frame before the highway.

  1. 05:45
    Raghupur Fort
    fort · 40 min from Banjar · 47 min on foot · about 2 h there
About 1.8 km and 47 minutes up from the pass by our measure, 22 down, to the grass-topped ruin with the valley on one side and the ranges on the other. The sun comes over the ranges to the east; be on top before it.
  2. ↓ 1 h 4 min by road · 31 km
    11:00
    Bahu Lake
    lake · 32 min from Banjar · 8 min on foot · about 1 h there
A small temple pond in the fields above Bahu village, 32 minutes from Banjar on the Jalori side, with the ridge forts on the skyline. A quiet last stop before the road to Aut.

Getting there

Through Aut on the Kullu highway, 24 km up the valley to Banjar and 15 km more up the pass road to Shoja. The overnight bus from Delhi's Kashmere Gate stops at Aut before the tunnel; Bhuntar's airport is 42 km from Banjar. The plan ends at Bahu lake above Banjar, on the way down to the highway.

Where to stay

Shoja for both nights — the last village before the pass, guesthouses on the bend with the ridge from the terrace, and the earliest start. Jibhi is the warmer, livelier alternative and adds half an hour to each dark drive.

Know before you go

  • Frost on the pass road by November; the taxi goes slowly in the dark, so leave earlier than you think.
  • Prices are bands checked in September 2026 and quoted on the day; the October long weekends run higher.
  • A layer for the top at dawn, and another — Jalori in November is cold enough to stop the hands.
  • The lake is glass at first light and ruffled by nine; the fort's sun is over the eastern ranges by about seven.
  • Snow can shut the pass road from late December; by early December the plan still works on most days, but ask.

If plans change

The river side in autumn: the classic three days does Gushaini, the pass and Chehni Kothi.

In snow: the winter plan keeps Jibhi and Shoja and takes the pass road as far as it is open.

Both walks in one trip without the dark starts: the Jibhi friends plan.

Questions people ask

Is October a good time for Jalori Pass and the Tirthan valley?

The best: the clearest skies of the year after the monsoon, warm days on the pass and cold clear nights, the oaks on the Serolsar ridge turning through the month and the meadow at Raghupur gone gold by November. The October long weekends fill Jibhi; Shoja stays quieter.

Can you see snow peaks from Jalori Pass?

From the pass itself the ranges to the north show on a clear day, and better from the top of Raghupur Fort, an hour's climb west of it, where the view opens both ways. October and November give the clearest air; by December the snow is on the pass road itself.

How cold is Jalori Pass in November?

Cold enough to need a proper layer at dawn and gloves on the ridge; the Bhuntar station's November normals are days around 23 °C and nights near 5 °C in the valley floor, and the pass sits far above that. Frost on the road by the month's end, and the first snow can come any time after.
