What it is

Gun Hill is a hilltop in the middle of Mussoorie, reached by a cable car that starts from the Mall Road. Wikipedia gives its height as about 2,024 m and calls it the second-highest point of the town, after Lal Tibba. A cannon on the hill once fired at midday to tell the town the time. The cable car is the reason most visitors go.

Getting there

On the Mall Road the cable car station is a short walk from the town centre. By road the hill is about 1.5 km and 5 minutes away on our routing, though the ropeway is the point of the visit. We have no verified fares, queue times or seasonal closures, so ask at the station before you plan around it.

The visit

You ride up in a small red car and come out on a rocky summit with a few stalls and a view of the town stacked on its slope below. The cable car is about the ride and the outlook, and an hour covers it. Expect a crowd at the weekend and in the summer months, when Mussoorie is full of visitors from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana.

If you want the long view of the snow ranges, Landour has the better ones, and on a clear day the ridge there is the place to be. Gun Hill is the easy first stop of a day in town.

When to go

April and May are warm and generally dry and clear before the rains, and October to February are dry and clear, with snow some years in December to February. See when to visit Mussoorie.

Around it

From the centre of town, Happy Valley with its Tibetan temple is 9 minutes by road, and Landour 9 minutes. Both are in the one-day plan; the two-day plan adds Sir George Everest's House and Kempty Falls.

What is the cannon on Gun Hill?

Wikipedia says a cannon at the top was used to sound midday for the townspeople, and the hill carries the name Gun Hill. We have no source for when the practice began or ended, so ask in town before repeating a date.
