Robber's Cave (Guchhupani) — a stream through a gorge near Dehradun
What it is
Robber's Cave, called Guchhupani by the people of Dehradun, is a river cave in a narrow gorge on the Doon valley's plateau. It is about 8 km from the centre of Dehradun and about 600 m long, split into two main parts. A stream runs through the cave, and the highest fall in it is about 10 m. Part-way in, the broken remains of a wall look like the ruins of a small fort.

The name
Locals believe that robbers hid here in the late 1800s to escape the British authorities and to store what they had taken, and that the maze of narrow passages suited them. The same story is told of the dacoit Sultana and his gang. We have no verified account to point to, so read it as local lore.
Getting there
By road it is about 8 km and 14 minutes from the city centre on our routing. Wikipedia says local buses run as far as Anarwala village, and from there the cave is a kilometre's walk. Inside, the path follows the stream, so you will be wading in places.
Combine it with
Tapkeshwar is 12 minutes from the city and the Forest Research Institute 10 minutes, so the three make an easy day. The one-day plan puts them in order. See also things to do in Dehradun.

What is Robber's Cave in Dehradun?
A river cave, known locally as Guchhupani, in a narrow gorge about 8 km from the centre of Dehradun. It is about 600 m long and divided into two main parts, with a stream running through it and a highest fall of about 10 m. Locals say robbers hid here from the British in the late 1800s.
How far is Robber's Cave from Dehradun?
About 8 km, which is about 14 minutes by road on our routing from the city centre. Wikipedia says local buses run to Anarwala village, and the last kilometre is a walk from there. Plan to wade, so wear shoes that can get wet, and avoid the cave after heavy rain.
How long do you need at Robber's Cave?
About an hour and a half, including the walk in. It is a short outing, so it combines easily with Tapkeshwar or the Forest Research Institute on the same day. Our one-day Dehradun plan does exactly that, and keeps the cave for the middle of the day when the gorge is lit.
