How to reach Sangla — the Kinnaur road from Shimla
A long single road in
Unlike valleys reached through a tunnel or a short highway spur, Sangla sits at the end of one long approach on NH5 through Kinnaur. There's no shortcut, and the road itself, much of it cut into the Sutlej gorge, is part of what the trip involves.
By road from Shimla
The most direct route: about 211 km and just over six hours via Kinnaur on NH5. HRTC buses and private taxis run this road regularly, though most travellers break the drive with a night in Rekong Peo (about 64 minutes short of Sangla) or Kalpa (about 81 minutes short) rather than pushing through in a single day.
By air
Bhuntar, also known as Kullu–Manali Airport, is the nearest airport — about 234 km and roughly seven hours from Sangla by road. Flights are limited and mostly connect through Delhi, and the road distance alone makes this a slower option than driving via Shimla for most itineraries.
By road from further away
Most travellers reach Sangla via Shimla rather than in one long push from a distant city — fly or bus to Shimla first, then continue on NH5 through Kinnaur. Chandigarh connects to Shimla by road; from there, treat the Shimla leg as the first, easiest stage of a longer journey.
