Kamru Fort
Kamru Fort, a seven-storey stone-and-wood tower above Sangla in Kinnaur, was the ancient capital of the Bushahr principality at the foot of Kinner Kailash.
What it is
A seven-storey tower at the top of Kamru village, a short drive from Sangla — the bottom two floors built in stone, the five above in wood. It was the ancient capital of the Bushahr principality before the seat of power moved on, and it stands at the foot of Kinner Kailash, the peak worshipped locally as Shiva's own house. A shrine to Kamakhya Devi, said by tradition to have been brought from Assam, sits inside the fort compound.
Getting there
A short drive from Sangla, about 4 minutes and roughly 2 km — close enough that some visitors walk it instead. Kamru village itself sits on a slope, so reaching the fort at its highest point means a real climb on foot regardless of how you arrive at the village below.
The visit
Only the resident priest may enter the fort's main structure, so most visitors see the shrine to Kamakhya Devi and the grounds around the tower rather than its interior. That's not much of a loss. The climb through the village and the view over the Baspa valley from the fort's base are the real draw. The tower's own seven-storey silhouette, stone giving way to weathered wood, is worth the walk on its own.

April to October, matching the rest of the Baspa valley's open season — snow and cold shut down much of what makes the walk worthwhile in winter.
