A gentle first day at altitude: the old town and its ridge in the morning, then two stops in the valley. It pairs the Leh Palace and the Shanti Stupa with Spituk and Stok Palace. Keep the pace slow; Leh is at about 3,524 m.

Questions people ask

What should you do on your first day in Leh?

Keep it light: the palace and the Shanti Stupa are close to the centre, and Spituk and Stok are short drives, about 10 and 20 minutes on our routing. Wikivoyage advises taking the first days easy because of the altitude. Drink water and skip long climbs.

How long is the plan?

A full day, from 08:30, counting the stops and the drives between them. The stops are 90, 30, 45, 45 and 45 minutes, with short drives between. Leave out Stok Palace if you tire early; it is the farthest. We have no verified opening hours, so check locally the evening before.

Do I need a permit?

The places on this plan are in and near Leh and need no permit that we know of. Wikivoyage names the district magistrate's office in Leh for permits to areas near the border. Rules change, so ask at the office or your operator before you plan anything beyond the Indus valley.
